Going on a cruise... OMG

Recommended Posts

hi, Ive been banded over a year. my weight loss has slowed, ive got about 20 more lbs before im really happy.

My family is going on a cruise (Western Carribien) over the Thanksgiving holiday. I need some advice on what to ask for, ideas about what to eat. I'm not really worried about gaining, my band is right at it's "sweet spot", but I tend to have problems eating out. maybe I eat too fast, by the time the food arrives, it looks good! I just dont want to have issues (sliming, etc) on vacation. I could stick to Soup, but I was hoping someone might have some good ideas!

Jayme is this your first cruise? Don't worry about what to eat. There are plenty of choices and you don't have to eat everything but can try whatever you like. They always offer a dieters selection. I have not been banded (yet) but have been on many cruises. As a matter of fact, it was on my cruise in September that I decided to come home and research the band. It felt like food was the biggest part of the entertainment and I got sick of being entertained! You will be fine - there are healthy choices - you just have to choose them. Hope this was helpful.

I LOVE cruising! The last cruise I went on was 6 months or so before I got my band. I have to say, it was a food FRENZY!! So many restaurants, 24 hour fast food restaurant, 24 hour FREE room service, all you can eat buffet at lunch, all you can eat grill at the pool. It was crazy. I gained a couple of pounds on that cruise to say the least.

I haven't booked another cruise because I'm really nervous about the food. There are definitely tons of options on a cruise, but I don't remember any of the "healthy" ones, because I don't think I ever ate any of the healthy foods on the last cruise. And if its anything like the last cruise, I'd be SO nervous that the room service would be so tempting. Anyhow, I'm sure there are healthy options - just get yourself mentally prepared to choose them (over all the crap thats on board). Maybe you should meet with your nutritionist and make a very specific eating plan for the whole vacation?

Cent - if you go on your cruise 3-4 weeks after being banded you'll probably be in the last week or the last couple of days of mushy foods. However, during the 5th week, you should be really easing into solid foods as you'll need to figure out what works for you and your band. If you're still on mushies during your cruise, I would really suggest not breaking your post-op diet as it could lead to band complications (which are not worth it for some cruise food...they'll definitely have mushy foods, or foods that you can mush down with your fork on the cruise, so stick with those. Also, you may want to bring some Protein shakes on board - the kind that you can buy pre-mixed and can just open and drink. Just check to make sure you'll have a fridge in your cabin). If you have begun to move to solids, be careful and go slowly as you won't know what you'll be able to tolerate at first. Good luck!

thanks all!!

I'm not really worried about finding smart choices, more about safe choices. there are days when fish works great, and days when one bite sets me off. same with veggies, chicken, etc. I hate to eat nothing but cheese for a week!

On vacation for those of you who will be newly banded, I suggest bringing powdered protien (Unjury is awesome) and sticking to easy foods like Soups, meatballs, everyone is different. Giant, (I hate to call you that) if you are two months out, you might have a fill before your trip. Be very carefull, dont push your band and your luck while away from home

I was banded 6/9, am going on a 4 night cruise next monday 10/26 and a 7 night cruise on 11/14. Being a travel agent ya go when you can.

I plan on bringing my Protein with me for breakfast, but will be eating what I can during the day, if something doesn't work, I will try something, if it doesn't work, I will try something else. I am really looking forward to the chilled Soups, and my filet mignon.

I was banded nov 18, 2008. I went on a cruise about 3 weeks after and have been on 2 after that. i think it might been easier on the cruise. Everything under the sun to pick from so no worries. Just take your time when eating. Good luck and have fun.

Weird thing before or after the surgery... I have never gained weight on a cruise. I guess so my chooses no reason to overeat always so much more food . At least that what i tell myself

Cruise Lines offer "Heart Smart" and also "Dieters Menu".

Shrimp cocktail for your appetizer--and then what ever lean meat product that is always on the menu. Most of the onboard Soups are heavy , yummy creamy soups. You can also ask for the childs portions(menu)

I'm planning a mini cruise up the Hudson River. O'r duerves will be served. I'm not worried. I studied for a year with a nutritionist to help train my mind for healthy food choices...before the band surgery. I even went on an 8 day cruise and didn't gain a pound! I just looked around to see what I could see and found good food choices. Watching people pile their plates a mile high (knowing that they couldn't finish it), made me sick to my stomach! Watching GLUTENY in all its rawness kept me on my eating program.

Yes I have seen this too. And I have seen them finish it! When my kids was growing up I wouldnt let them do this cause the food gets cold and they try to eat so fast that thay dont tast it. And it a wast. I do the same but I am heavy but my kids are fit. Cant wait for my cruise.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
