Struggling with my protein, Please help me my wise friends!

Recommended Posts

I am struggling to get in my 70gr of Protein everyday in my three 1/2 cup meals (and two 2 oz snacks). It seems like all I eat is protein but when I add it up I am usually around 50 to 55 gr. I am supposed to eat my protein rather than drink it so I haven't been having Protein Shakes. I eat Greek yogurt for the higher protein, Protein Bars for Snacks. I would appreciate some tips and food items to help boost my protein. My regular menu items are eggs, cheese, chicken, turkey, tuna, cottage cheese and yogurt so any other suggestions would be welcomed!!!

Have you tried the Protein puddings? They are really good and gove you 15 grams of protein with 7 carbs. I get them at Bariatriceating.com. I love the choc chip with marshmallow. I usually add a little Splenda too since I like them a little sweeter. Also, I know that people with bands are told not to drink protein, but if I can't get enough through food, both my doctor and dietician say I can drink shakes too. So I have a chocolate shake made with skim milk and that adds up to 23 grams of protein.

You can also make your own Protein pudding...get some unflavored Protein Powder (I bought Unjury), and you can pretty much add it to anything to boost the protein (pudding, cottage cheese, crystal light, etc.).

How about using the yogut to make a Protein smoothie. I add powdered low fat milk and protein powder. Or you can just add protein powder to the yogurt. Another thought would be to drink a protein bullet. Walmart carries New-Whey Liquid Protein 42g protein 0 sugar 0 fat. I find it a little pricey but keep a few on hand for the days that get crazy schedule wise.

Oh yeah, I would get some powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury. You can add it to so many things and get that extra Protein. Get the unflavored for flexibility.

I also bought some EAS chocolate Protein powder adn sometimes start the day with a shake. Only 130 calories too.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll give that a try.

My goal is 70 also and am finding VERY difficult.

I ordered Unjury unflavored and put it in Crystal Lite and it was AWFUL! I ordered the office packets and put one in one bottle of fruit flavored Crystal Lite...maybe it was too much?

You have to add the unjury and taste it to find a good amount. Don't just dump in a bunch and expect it to work.

Also, add the Unjury to cottage cheese, chili, etc. It's great in food.

Someone just turned me on to Muscle Milk Light Ready to Drink (chocolate). 100 calories, 15 g of Protein and 3 grams of fat. It's like drinking chocolate milk! I am developing an addiction already!

Good luck!!!

I put the GNC whey Protein powder in sups like Tomato or butternut squash...make sure your protein powder isnt sweet like vanilla!

I also love the unjury unflavored. I add it to almost anything. Try adding it to your yogurt and cottage cheese, and you'll definitely meet your Protein requirements for the day. One scoop is 20 g. Protein. It's great in Soup, also.

I use it every day to make my own Protein shake with my own ingredients -- fresh fruit, carrots, greens, DaVinci sugar-free flavorings, PB2, etc.

Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
