Hello everyone,

My name is Mya and I am currently pre op. My surgery is set for December 3rd and I am getting pretty jumpy! I have 5 children and am hoping to get an idea of how this might affect them or how I might feel after surgery (as in, what kind of support system I might need in place). I have approx 150 lbs to lose and am so excited to finally get a handle on my weight issue.

I have been overweight since after my first pregnany (approx 14 years ago). I am wondering if there are any others here who have wieght issues who don't necessarily binge. I know this is a heated topic, and I mean to offend no one. I have found that most who decide on bariatric surgery have a negative relationship with food. I used to have a VERY negative realtionship with food in my early adolescence( I was bulemic/anorexic) and I wonder what effect this has had on my weight and may have on this journey. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

~Mya

Hi Mya, welcome to lapbandtalk! When it comes to kids, you will be restricted in how much weight you can lift right after surgery (so as not to dislodge the stitches). So if your kids are very young and require physical picking up and holding, you might want to start thinking about people that can help with that.

Other than that, the only other issue you might have is preparing meals for the kids. There may be times pre and post op when you'll be on liquids, and preparing real food can be torture, lol. Also, (and I don't know if this is applicable in your situation) once you're banded, you'll need to eat healthier food.....so there could be a change in diet for the whole family. That's all I can think of right now.

Thanks for the reply! I just started thinking about not being able to lift the little guys, lol. I had major surgery about 2 years ago, and I had the same drill. (but I wondered if it would be the same since this isn't a "major" surgery. )

One problem I seem to be having is that because it will be right before Christmas, my inlaws are having a hard time understanding that I might not want to host the big Christmas get together. I was thinking it might be wayyyy to much and kind of mean to expect me to prepare all the yummy holiday food when I will still not be even eating "real" food yet. My dh is also being kinda wierd trying to commit us to the company Holiday Party (think 3 day get away in tahoe with drinking and partying, lol) that will potentially be a few days after I return from surgery. Do you have any advice with how to deal with people who don't "get it"?

I actually would have preferred not to tell anyone (especially the in laws) but couldn't figure out a way to get around it since it's the Holiday season. KWIM?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
