my first fill..i dont feel well

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Today i had my first fill. I had my surgery done 18 september. Its a 10cc and i had 5cc put in there..i cannot keep food down whatsoever and am sipping Water very slowly. I had 3 bites of my omelette and it came right back up again. My surgeon suggested 4cc but i really wanted more because the last week ive got my appetite back..my weightloss has been great but the past week ive put on 2 kgs!! anyway just wanted to know if this is a normal reaction??

Thanks guys!

You should stick to fluids the first day after having a fill, then have mushies the next day, then slowly normal food again. Particularly as this is your first fill. It's completely normal to have gained weight before your first fill so don't worry about that. Make sure you take tiny bites and chew every bite at least 20 times before swallowing. If you are doing all this and still not keeping any food down then you should go back to your doctor for a small unfill.

Don't wait 8 weeks if there is a problem. It's pretty hard to function if your body isn't getting the nutrients it needs (which it won't be if you can't keep anything down!). I'd give it a week tops.

hello

i agree with emma dont wait 8 weeks, you could become quiet ill if you arent getting the nutrients that you need and you wont if you can only get liquids down. my surgeons nurse said to me that if you cant eat normally then your band is too tight. we only want to cut the amount of food that we eat and by only being able to have liquids is not good, you need to go back to your surgeon if after 3 days you are unable to eat mushies. good luck and dont wait 8 weeks

You should stay on liquids for at least a couple of days. Not every doctor recommends that, but it seems most do, and since you already know you're having trouble with soft foods, I think you would benefit from that schedule.

Many people have swelling after a fill, and pb'ing can make it worse. Also, for whatever reason, many banders have trouble with eggs, so you might fall into that category too. Don't try soft foods until you can keep Water and Protein shakes down okay.

However, if you find that you can't get your Water and Protein Shakes down you need to go back asap for an unfill. You can become dehydrated very quickly.

I would stay on liquids for a couple of days, soft foods for a couple of days, and then, as long as soft foods are going down okay, move to solids. If you find you can't move to solids within one or at the most two weeks, go back in then for an unfill. Don't wait eight weeks. You're setting yourself up for trouble if you keep a too tight band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
