How long were you out of work post-op??

Recommended Posts

My surgeon never really indicated how long to expect to be out of work following lap band surgery. He said most patients feel better 3-5 days post-op. I had planned on a week, but they also repaired a hiatal hernia. It's been 5 days today, and I am still full of painful gas and some discomfort in the hernia and port site. So I was curious how much time other bandsters took off work?

I would wait until you are feeling up to it to go back to work. When I had my surgery 9/22 it took me a good 2 weeks before I felt like doing anything. It's best to take it easy than to push yourself.

Good Luck to you!

It's so different for everyone. I work from home and took three days. If I had to leave the house, it would have been longer - I was feeling tender - both in terms of physical and emotional.

I had my surgery on Tuesday, June 30th and was back to work the following Monday. But I only worked a half a day for the next couple of days. That was not my intent but it turned out to be what I needed.

I had my surgery last Thursday, took Friday off, worked from home Monday and returned to work on Tuesday. I really felt like crap though. It also doesn't help that I have an hour commute (and I don't drive a Lexus if you get my drift).

Frankly, I kind of still feel like crap. My doc requires a four-week post op "Protein shake" diet and I can't stand the shakes and Protein drinks so I'm basically starving myself. Constipated, gassy, and starving doesn't make for a very comfortable workday.

I took 2 1/2 weeks. It was really 18 days with weekends I work a 4/40. I could have gone back earlier but I would have been really tired. I was tired for the first week or so. I think sleeping and relaxing is a big part of healing.

My doc MADE me take off 6 weeks because my job requires me to do some lifting. I work in home health care and do a lot of cleaning/shopping for my clients. No lifting over 10 pounds, no vacuuming, no dog walking. I was pretty damn bored by the end of those 6 weeks.

I was banded on a Monday and returned to teaching HS the following Tuesday. Would have gone on Monday , but it was Columbus Day. I did get jostled a bit by kids hauling book bags and stayed out of the halls when it was class change time!

My job is pretty physical (non to mention I don't want to be exposed to H1N1) so I'm taking 3 full weeks off, then I'm going to go back and work a 4 hour shift and 2 8 hour shifts on the 4th week postop. I'll be working my normal hours by my 5th week postop.

I had surgery on Wed, March 4 and returned to work

Monday, March 16. I could not of returned sooner because I spend a lot of time running to the bathroom the first week.

The first two weeks I returned to work were awful, I had terrible gas pains in my right shoulder and it was hard to sit all day. I would try to walk has much a possible. Don't rush it!

My surgeon wrote my note for 3 weeks, he said I could go back earlier if I wanted to. I took the whole three weeks and really needed the time for myself.

There are a million good Protein Drinks out there. Try something else. If you starve you will get depressed, may have already happened. It is so important to get the proper nutrition. Hope you can get this figured out.

I had surgery Sat. 09 19. I went to work Tuesday and worked on my feet all week. I should have rested a little longer though. I had a rough day the following Monday. It was my day off anyway but I didn't want to do anything at all. It was only one day and I was very much better on Tues. morning. It is typical for me to push too hard but it worked out in the long run. I think people need to listen to their body and treat it the way it needs to be treated. Best of luck to everyone....

Those shoulder pains are wierd.. Mine were in my left shoulder and stayed for a couple weeks. Sometimes pretty severe. Then they just left. I still don't understand them. My daughter who was banded two years ago, say she still gets them if she over eats.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
