Could This have been a "stuck" episode?

Recommended Posts

Ok...two nights ago I ate some white bean chicken chili, have eaten it before with no problems. I was banded back in June and have what I consider good restriction. I ate a small bowl and when I started to feel that "full" feeling I stopped. Went and watched tv for a while. About three hours later I started having severe chest pains. These were right about the area where my sternum is. It felt like someone was sitting on my chest and it hurt to breath. It wasn't my heart but it hurt and it hurt bad. My roommate was taking me to the hospital (I didn't think it was a stuck issue since I hadn't eaten in like three hours) and stopped at the fire department because I was in so much pain. They ended up taking me to the hospital. They shot me up with morphine and soon after arriving at the hospital the pain stopped. All tests showed that my heart is fine and it wasn't that. They said I could have had spasams in my chest but I don't think that was it either. I don't know what it was, but it hurt like hell. If this is what stuck is like, then that's fine, I just don't want to be that scared again not knowing what it was. I've taken too big of a bite before and know what that feels like, but the pain is usually higher in my chest when that happens, that is why I'm questioning if it was a "stuck episode." Has anyone else experienced severe chest pains like that?

When I've gotten stuck, it's been pretty much instantaneous! I can't imagine it taking 3 hours for you to feel it. But that is where the pain is when you get stuck.

I've not heard of anyone having a delayed reaction to being stuck either.

You definitely did the right thing by getting to the hospital.

Donna, were you been able to drink between the time you had the chili and three hours later when the chest pains started? If fluids went down fine, then it doesn't sound like it could have been a stuck episode from the chili. Like Cathy, I've never had anything hit me three hours after eating either. It's been bang. You were very smart to get to the hospital.

I have never heard of this either... Stuck is stuck instantaneously.. Sounds like angina or a panic attack to me... but what do I know! Wouldn't dismiss it too quickly if it happens again.. need to know what is causing it..... Good luck!

This is happening to me today. Not as painful as you and I don't feel the need to go to the hospital. But it happened this afternoon about 3 hours after eating VERY little and then again tonight about 2 hours after eating. It feels like someone is squeezing me and hard to breathe. Not sure what the heck is going on!

No this definately was not a panic attack. It was the worst pain I've felt (besides labor) and it would not go away no matter what I did. It was in my chest, but the bottom, right about where your sternum is.....I will be going to my band doctor next Monday and talk to him about it. I think it was something to do with the band since the pain was generating below the chest but raidiated upwards and down.....I just know that I don't want to experience that again. Like I said before, I didn't think it was a "stuck" episode as I have had that chest pain and it was sooo different from that. Hmmm.....guess I might never know what it was, but the good news was that it wasn't my heart!

do you still have your gallbladder? this sounds like a gallbladder attack to me. Your gallbladder produces bile to digest the food you've eaten, thus the timing would be right. And the pain is right in the middle of the chest. I had mine out 9 wks postpardum with my first child. Worst pain ever!

You might want to make an appt with a gastroenterologist, as they can do an ultrasound to see if you have stones. There are a couple threads on LBT about all the people with gallbladder probs after getting the band, you might want to check those out...

It was probably heartburn. Yep, I've had that feeling and my co-worker has. With both of us is was GERD. Hurts like a heart attack. You might try some Pepsid or something next time.

I had the same thing last week, It hurt like a heart attack in the middle of my chest. I called my Dr and he recommended I go to the ER but I knew it wasn't a heart attack.

I tried Gas-X without relief then at 3 am I got up to dress to go to the ER and decided to try some Milk Of Magnesia. Instant relief. I had the same feeling the next morning and took the MOM again.

I saw the Dr on Tuesday and he said it might be GERD and he did an unfill. I had nothing in my band but he took out all the air too. I haven't had the feeling at all since then, but I am STARVING!

I gained 2 lbs in a little less than a week and don't like it.

The Dr said I have been losing too fast anyhow but I am going to see him next week and going to try a small fill just so I can get through the night without eating everything in the house.

I haven't yet felt that this surgery was a good idea. From the day I came home I have had pain, felt uncomfortable and just not happy. I am hoping I can get to the good spot soon.

Sorry you are having such a rough time, Mickey! The band hasn't been a pic nic for me either.. not for everybody.. Bud i WOULD DO IT AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT! of course, I had a lot more to lose than you did! 88 pounds lighter, and I feel better than I have in YEARS! .. Long way to go, but I have the tool I need now to be successful! Good luck!

I would have them check your gall bladder the pain feels like what I would think a heart attack would feel like in the center and right side piercing into your back.

Thanks so much for the input here. I go to the doctor next Monday and will talk to him. It does sound like the gallbladder from what I have read online about attacks. I had eaten the chili about three hours prior and it was super spicy, which tends to set off gallbladder attacks also. I just know that it is not something that I want to go through again if I can help it. I'm just hoping this was a one-time incident because I don't want another surgery either!

You might also try gas x strips. The band is somewhat tight, and the way things go through, I tend to burp much more often (many people do), and foods like chili can cause gas? Maybe it was causing pain? Either that, or maybe the reflux like some others mentioned.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
