Gained 2 pounds on MUSHIES.... Not thrilled.

Recommended Posts

Hey there guys. I'm a little bit discouraged at the moment and could really use some advice.

I am 2 weeks post op, just over actually, and I GAINED 2 pounds. I do not have a fill yet. I had my surgery on September 25th, and lost 10 lb in the first week. I then lost 3 lb the second week ( weigh on thursdays ). This morning when I weighed myself, I had Gained 2 pounds. How the heck does that happen???

I am not cleared for exercise until Monday, so i'm sure that will help.. I am still on mushies but can eat some scrambled eggs, soft Proteins and crackers. I am hardly taking anything in as I can't eat more than 1/4 cup at a time. How on EARTH do you gain 2 pounds on mushies?!? I'm SO frustrated. Anyone with similar experiences?? Could really use some support today. Thanks guys!

Nicole

Don't worry, things will get better. Your body has just been through a lot and is trying to adjust. Those 2 lbs will drop back off. Just stick with your diet plan, get the fluids in, keep your chin up and continue your celebration of the new you that you are creating! Be patient, these things take time.

Some of that gain may be from getting rehydrated after surgery. You are probably able to drink more.

But...you can definitely gain weight on mushy foods. Be sure to eat your Proteins first and then whatever non-starchy veg you're able to eat. I'd avoid the crackers - they offer nothing in the way of nutrition and everything in the way of carbs and calories.

Edited to change: WAIT to WEIGHT....shocking.

I seem to recall gaining a bit in the first month after surgery or at least being at a stand-still. And that was while I was on liquids as my surgeon didn't allow mushies til one month out. Just watch the sodium and get your Water and Protein in and you will be fine.

Nandra, the bottom line is obvious once you think about it. Youve been on liquids. liquid digests very quickly and passes right through your body. solid food takes a bit of time to traverse digestion in the stomach and then absorbtion in the intestines and then out of the body. So the physical weight of your food increases when you start eating mushy and then solid food. Then you will start losing.

Remember having a stomach virus, how you lost a bunch of weight? Same principle.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess the responses do make sense to me. Going from liquids to mushies is obviously a different texture, and more nutrition. I just felt a little crazy for a little bit there! I felt like I was doing something wrong...

Laying off the crackers is probably a good idea... carbs carbs carbs. They just go down so easy! lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
