Did anyone start the mushy phase earlier? I had my surgery on 9-23. I am supposed to wait 3wks to introduce mushy foods, which is still 1 more week out. I feel so hungry now. I would love to slowly start the mushy phase, but i am scared? Any input? :)

I had my surgery on the same day and I starting feeling really hungry about 9 days out. I was also supposed to wait before I went on to mushies, but I ended up calling my doc's office. He gave me permission to go ahead and start on mushies that day. What a difference it made in my energy level and my attitude! So, my suggestion is, call your surgeon and ask if you can start to incorporate some more solid foods. Just be careful tho, cuz I went a little overboard and had a nasty incident with a piece of baked chicken! Not a great experience!! If they give you permission, start out slow and make sure the food is mushie. Good luck.

I feel your pain! I was banded 9/24 and started getting very hungry about a week out. Didn't help that my husband and everyone around me was eating pizza and burgers and all of the things I can't have. I saw my Dr. on 10/6 which was like 12 days postop, and they moved me on to mushies. I think as long as you can handle it, then its fine. Every surgeon has their preference, I've even heard of people going to mushies on the 3rd day. Since I've been on mushies/soft foods, I feel great!

Yes, I never did the liquid stage. I was banded on 15th Sept and was on pureed food from day 1 for 2 weeks. Now I am on soft food for a further 2 weeks before going on to normal food.

However, I would phone you doctor and get his go-ahead before altering your diet just in case things go wrong and you mess up all your hard work.

Well done for getting this far

I'm starving too! I'm a week out and still in the 4 week liquid only diet (altho I added Tomato Soup and it wasn't on the list but it makes me feel satiated. I knoow I'm going to despise Jello after all of this too! So many people get to start eating sooner than me,makes me wonder if it's safe for those people, why not me??

Think I'll order a pizza now

Just kidding.

Hang in there, you've got plenty of company in the same boat. ((HUGS))

I found the key to the liquid stage was Protein. I found ways to do protein because I am diabetic and can not do any type of sugar. I made Soup and added melted cheese, I got Protein Drinks from a bariatric web site that had very low carbs, I put things in the blender and thinned them with chicken stock. I even bought baby food chicken and beef and thinned it with broth. It worked, it kept me from being hungry..... D......

My doctor has me on Clear Liquids until Thursday. The nurses said I couldn't even have Jello. I would really like some milk or cream of wheat at this point. On Thursday I am supposed to go to a full liquid diet that includes some mushies. Its confusing when I hear that others didn't have to do clears at all and knowing that I just go straight from clears to cereals. I don't want to get sick but I am hungry now and Protein Water is not doing it for me like it was.

I find it crazy that people are on clear liquids for weeks after surgery. I really find it unnecessary. I'll be leaving the hospital at stage 3 - full liquids. If you can have a clear liquid why can't you have a full liquid? It's still liquid!

It depends on the doctor. I think most are using the guidelines from the Lap Band and Realize Band companies. Others are modifying them.

My doc has a band and my diet was a revised. I was on each phase for approx. 3 days and I was back on solid foods at the beginning of week 3 with a cautionary note to chew well, take small bites and pay attention to which foods go down hard...and avoid them.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
