Head Hunger getting me down...

Recommended Posts

Hi out there!!

I'm 12 days post op and feeling great however today my head hunger is really getting to me. I know i'm not physically hungry but my head is telling me I need to eat something...I've caught myself several times today reaching for food out of reflex and I have to tell myself...."Hey STOP! You're not actually hungry!!"

How do we battle this head hunger?!?!?! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Celestial I know just how you feel. I am 14 days post op and still have the same problem. I can walk near the kitchen and I stop and look to see what is there to eat, then I realize what I'm doing and walk away. The head hunger is the hardest part of this new life. Maybe we'll get over it before too long and if anyone has advice I'd love to hear it too.

I drink a cold bottle of Water (sometimes flavored) when I feel that head hunger. It doesn't always work, but it does most of the time.

When I experience that nagging head hunger I find the best way for me to handle it is to change my focus.

Go outside, pull some weeds, Water some plants, go for a walk, or do what I do.....hop on my bicycle and ride.

Besides changing your focus, physical activity diminishes hunger, even head hunger.

Give it a try!

Thanks for the suggestions!!! I tried both the Water and the bicycle and both worked!!! :)

I don't know why i didn't just think to change focus...I was so stuck in focusing on the head hunger that I couldn't think past it.

Thank you so much for the helpful advice.

Happy2lose...great advise. Why can't I remember to do that when the head hunger hits me? I'm going to work on that.

I have a problem with head hunger too and I'm 3 months post op. My weight loss is very slow and I graze. So...I have many issues to work on. I think the re-focus idea is great. I just keep forgetting to do that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
