Pre op liquid diet bad headache.

Recommended Posts

this is my second day on my liquid pre op diet. I have a headache and have drinking carnation shakes all day. yesterday I did slim fast there both boring and the broth is nasty as hell. I guess I will just be on shakes for the 10 days this shit is really hard for me oh my gosh, but I will for sure be sticking with this because I want my surgery. I was feeding my son today hamburger helper and I did have about 4 bites though. I won't do that again.

Hi Neesh,

I go on week long liquid fasts every so often when my body just feels blah from too many carbs.

My experience...the first day or two is the roughest. After that it gets easier. I drink the low carb Slim Fast shakes in the can and I actually like them. Many times they're my Breakfast of choice even when I'm not dieting. During the liquid fasts, I drink 6 of them a day because I'm limiting my intake to under 1200 calories. Carbs are about 12gm for the day which does wonders for my blood sugar levels.

Headaches are usually nothing more than your body complaining about the change. They usually go away in a day or two and aspirin works well in the meantime.

Watch your activity level. When I do the week long liquid fast, I notch my activity level down a bit. I try to remember to just move a bit slower...no sudden moves.

Stick to it. You will be amazed at how good you actually feel after a few days. Little 'cheats' will delay your body's ability to adapt meaning the headaches, tiredness, etc. will continue for the entire time period.

Hang in there!

Neesh:

I had those horrible headaches too. I think it was from giving up caffeine.

I think that the best thing that helps you to get through the pre-op liquid diet is to remember that you are making your surgery safer by following it to the "t".

Best wishes to you. I love my band and my new flat tummy!

Sue

ITA!!

I had the absolute worst headache EVER during my pre-op, seriously, I almost went to the hospital. I called my doctor (on a Sunday afternoon mind you) and he told me it was from caffeine withdrawal. He allowed me to drink a diet soda or 2 (I think it took 2 for me) and POW, it was gone!

I SO feel for you you right now, it is SO HARD, but SO WORTH IT!! Hang in there, and no more Hamburger Helper

Well I dont think anyone here has thoguht about what she is actually drinking. Both shakes are high in sugar compaired to what is on our Lists from the nutritionists. My nutritionist told me that I have to stay away from Boost, Glurcerna, Slim fast, carnation, Ensure because they are low in protien and high in sugar. They dont fill you up and cause a sugar crash and headache, ect.

What you should be using is something under 10 gms of sugar, and over 20 grams of protien. Fiber around 3-5 grams a plus. There are many great tasting affrodable shakes.

I personally love Met-Rx Protien Plus vanilla and Muscle Milk Cookies & Cream.

Go to www.bariatricadvantage.com and check out some better options. Good Luck Hun!

My nutritionist told me that I have to stay away from Boost, Glurcerna, Slim fast, carnation,

The low carb slimfast doesn't have the sugar, but only has 10gm of Protein.

I wouldn't mind a better alternative, but it seems like everything contains soy.

Well Like I said its low in protien. To feel satified and to make sure you are getting enough nutrients you need more then 20.

I get a very yummy vanilla shake thats 100 cals, 25 gms of protien and 2 carbs at Trader Joes or my local Vitamin store. Met-Rx Protien Plus.

Other good tasting alts are:

Muscle Milk Lite (several flavors for you to try-out)

Designer whey

Bariatrix

EAS Lite

herbalife shakes

Isopure Low carb (fruity and clear shake)

Isopure Plus (fruity and clear shake)

I feel your pain too! I am on day 6 of my liquid diet. I have to do it 3 full weeks before surgery. The first 3 days were the hardest, I agree with another post I think you need more Protein and less sugar, I bet that will help your head.

You can do it Neesh. I am on 12 days into my 3 week liquid diet. It is a tough road that we choose but we are doing it to become healthy. I struggle still with my liquid diet. We can do it. I know I don't know you but we are all here to support one another. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Hang in there it will all be worth it!

It is mind over matter & you going through withdrawl.

Like others have said, it gets easier once you get it out of your system.

Cheating will only prolong your hunger for more...

I found Isopure to be a god send!!!

40 grams of protien & 0 carbs! I love them & I drink 1 a day on my post op diet.

I am on day 4 of being banded and I was surprised chicken broth would enough & it was!

I will not do anything to mess up my procedure. Follow your Drs instructions, you'll see in the long run you will be happy you did!

Where do you get Isopure and are certain flavors better than others. Also...does it contain soy?

Actualy it clear so no dairy!

They come about 6-8 flavors.

I purchased 3 @ GNC to taste them for about $4 a bottle.

I went online & found them about $40 for a case of 12.

Drugstore.com has them the cheepest.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
