Any one band at 200 lbs - Im wondering if this is right for me?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery in November,2007 and I weighed 242 and I'm 5.1 1/2" Now I weigh 174 lbs. I still have more to go,but I think that anything over 200 lbs. is obese. We're not dying, but we can get sick in the future....

I was in the same boat as you and the other posters.

it comes down to one simple question.........

if your current weight/health interferes with your life and you have tried other ways and it hasn't worked, I say.......

go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how are you feeling?

I feel great & am ready to drop these 12s & put on an 8!

I'm day 5 post surgery!

I'm ready to return to wk.

The only reason I am waiting 1 full week is due to the sutures, I don't want them to pop.

What a great thread, it's nice to read about people who are around 200 and still going for it! It makes me feel so much better. I have lots of wishy washy feelings at times. Am I doing the right thing? I lost a lot on my own, why cant I just do the rest on my own too? My problem is that I can loose it but then I wind up gaining it back.

I'm 5'4" and currently weigh 197.6 lbs. I was just recently approved by my insurance company for the procedure. I'm really excited about starting this new chapter in my life. My only regret is not going through with it three years ago. Best of luck to you!!!

How did you get your insurance to approve you at this weight? What insurance do you have? Mine wouldnt even consider it and I am the same height and same weight.

Thanks.

I, too, was 200 lbs at 5'. I have diabetes 2, gerd plus a few other problems. That was how I was allowed to be banded on August 26th. My insurance required me to be on the 6 month diet. I started in January working with my doctor and a dietician. Eating low fat, 1200 cal. Never did eat 1200 cal. Exercised my butt off. On my surgery day I was 166 and this morning (10/8) I weighed in at 153.5. I get my first fill on October 23. I do not regret this at all.

I was originally 285 lbs on March 19th when I started the six month program. I have BCBS PPO. During the six month, I changed my lifestyle and ate healthy. I also worked out regularly. The weight came off. I also have several co-morbitities. My insurance company goes by your original weight and BMI and takes into account any co-morbitities and other factors. I was a bit nervous about being approved since I lost soo much weight but I was told on Tuesday that I was indeed approved. They would probably consider it at my current height and weight considering my other health problems but I'm not sure about that. I'm lucky that they went with my original weight and BMI.

I would have loved to have our insurance cover this, but in order to do that I would have had to gain enough to get my BMI over 45 NO WAY! My insurance company are CHEEP! Then after that would have had to do the 6 month program on Weight Watchers AND attend 2 meetings a week AND my husband would have had to attend 2 meetings a week. So many hoops! So am am self pay but still happy about my decision.

I have to admit I am speechless. Getting lapband at 166 lbs. You did so great losing so much weight before the band why did you not keep it up? And, your insurance paid for this when you could have only been 30/40 pounds overweight at that point? What insurance do you have?

Good Luck!

I thought the exact thing when I read that!! I mean thats wonderful success on your own- why go through surgery when it is obvious you could accomplish it by yourself? Either way you should be very proud of the weight you lost!

I'm 5'2 and my starting weight was 208. I have to admit, when they did my height and weight I slouched a little because I was so afraid insurance wouldn't approve me. I think my official height is listed as 5'1 and a 1/2. shhh Insurance covered it.

Weight loss has been slow.. but I'm hanging in there. I love my band and the control it has given me over food.

I want to lose another 20 pounds. I'm upping my exercise and hoping that will get things moving again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
