how soon to exercise again?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering how soon you got back to exercising after surgery?

I'm in physical therapy for a knee injury (scope surgery 5 mo. ago for that) I currently ride stationary bike 20 minutes, leg extension machine 15 min, and a leg press machine 15 min. VERY little weight and resistance still. It's a workers comp. injury & if I'm not in pt they're threating to not send my "paycheck".

My dr said nothing for 4 weeks after surgery. Exercise person at his office said I can do same as what I'm currently doing starting a few days after surgery. I will ask him again when I see him but in the meantime was wondering about anyone else who's already had surgery.

You definitely can't do any weight training/lifting for quite awhile after surgery, but my doctor okayed me to get on the treadmill (at a moderate pace) a week after surgery.

My doctor cleared me for working out after one week.

I saw my surgeron yesterday. I reminded him I'm NOTwanting to lift weights, I just need clearance to walk on treadmill.

Initially he said no treadmill but discharge notes said to walk 15-30 min. a day. Well, if I have to walk I'd rather do it on treadmill right now instead of outside in 30 degree temps and snow.

Yesterday he said that I CAN walk on treadmill at S L O W pace. :crying: No bike b/cause that uses abdominals/stomach muscles & those still need to heal.

I was banded a little over a month ago and the week after surgery I was out running. I only mention it because its possible and my surgeon even said it was okay....HOWEVER, with all of the diet restrictions, I almost passed out from fatigue. Not to mention it felt like I could feel the band moving around in me. So I gave it a rest.

Now Im moderately increasing my exercise, really planning to kick it into high gear starting November, but for me to "get right" it took about a month.

Everyones body is different though, do what feels right for you.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
