Hello Bethany

I had surgery on 8/14 my biggest issue was gas bubbles. My pain was primarily in my upper left shoulder. The pain was terrible and it lasted about 6 weeks. I can tell you that overtime it gets better but the first week or two are pretty miserable. Good Luck to you on you life changing journey....

Bethany - It's different for everyone but I'll tell you the gas pains in my left shoulder were debilitating, such pain, brought me to tears. BUT, it only lasted a week. By the 7th day I was feeling significantly better. I am now 10 weeks out and haven't had a gas pain like it since week one. It does get better!!

Thanks all, its funny, the pain is in my left shoulder as well! I wonder why we all had in left shoulder... It really is horrible. I feel like someone is hitting me with a sledgehammer! Also, is it normal not to know if I am hungry or not? It's the strangest feeling! Thanks for the support

I know my doctor asked me if I had bad gas pain and if I felt them in my shoulder. She told me if I did to call the doctors office and they would give a script to take care of it. You might want to call your doctor and see if they can do the same for you.

Walk, walk and walk some more. You might think you can't due to the soreness, but walk anyway. The more you walk, the more gas is expelled. On day 4, I thought...OMG...what have I done to myself? What have I gotten into? I had a mini panic attack and just started walking. At the 3 mile mark, I felt sooooo much better.

I was banded 11 days ago and I can promise you it does go away! For me, the biggest thing was not being able to burp because I could feel the gas in my stomach, pushing against the band. I found that once I ate/drank something, so my Water and broths, the gas would more easily come out.

Make sure you're drinking your fluids!

I also had surgery on Oct 1st!! My gas pain is also in my left shoulder, it is starting to go away but is worse at night, hot pads really seem to help me. I experiencing the same thing with not knowing if i am hungry or not....I feel like I am hungry because my stomach is rolling, but that could also be gas. What kind of Protein shakes are you doing??? I am supposed to be on Clear liquids for 10days, but can't tolerate mixing Protein with my Water or broth...are your shakes creamy??

I had the same thing. It was so painful. I went ahead and got my 1 vicodin prescription refill for the next few days. It hurt that bad.

But it has gone away since then, thank god!

((Bethany))

I was banded the same day as you and like you, struggle with the gas pains. Today was my first day on the treadmill and I found it did help some. I hear sleeping while in the recliner helps too. Good luck to you and I;m interested in what everyone else has to say about it.

Blessings!!

Marci

Hi I am day 10 post op and only had shoulder pain for a couple of days, totally gone now and hopefully a thing of the past. My surgeon promotes getting active ASAP and I have taken his advise on board and been walking on my treadmill daily and I believe this has really helped with the healing process as I feel great.

I will quote some information on the shoulder pain from a book I was given before the proceedure which I refer to if I am unsure of what is going on inside my body..... it's called the Lapband Solution ....The shoulder pain actually comes from the diaphram, which is a large sheet of muscle that seperates the chest, with its heart and lungs, from the abdomen. It is called referred pain because it comes from the diaphram and the brain interprets it as coming from the left shoulder and you feel sore there. ........ I hope that is of some help to you and that your shoulder pain is relieved soon.

I agree, walk every free chance you can get.

I had the procedure done Oct 3rd & I started walking ASAP!

Another great tip to help with pain is very small short sips & swallows!

The less you swallow the less air you swallow & the less pressure you put on your band.

And, the most important that no one has mentioned is breathe!!!

Take in breathes slow as far as you can & then push out as far as you can. This pushes all the all like a vacume.

When you push out you will notice small burps. This is what is causing the pain.

I was told gas medication is not good for you in large quantities because you don't want to grow dependant on them.

I don't take any now & my pain went away by day 3!

Now the only preassure I feel is from my drinking.

And when I start to feel build up I just breathe as deep as I can it it pushed the gar right out!

Amazing? I know!!!

That is interesting what you are saying about breathing because there are times I felt like my entire ribcage/abdominal muscles are so sore I have to make myself breathe at times.

That has been scary because I have asthma and I came home to two children with the swine flu. So, believe me, I am working on the breathing as much as possible.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
