surgical site question

Recommended Posts

I know my Dr was male so he doesn't know much about female anatomy or whatever but I am going to have to set him straight.

I have a small incision right at the bottom of my breasts right where the band from my bra sits. I have it covered now but it still hurts from my surgery on 9/18. I put some neosporin and a bandaid on it today since the scab finally fell off but it is red, sore and starting to itch. I just don't feel comfortable without a bra, I have tried but can't walk around without one on. I would think they could find a better spot to cut.

Also, the area where the port is (right above my belly button) is red. The scab came off there too, but there are a few sutures poking through the skin and they rub on everything. the nurse told me to cut them if I feel them but I can't cut them close enough to the skin and they are driving me crazy so I covered them too.

the other 3 incisions are healing ok, but still red. not inflamed but redder than I thought they should be by this point in the game.

Anyone else have troubles? Is it ok to cover them at this point? I can call the Dr they are always on call, but for such a trivial question I thought you all might know more and I will call during the day tomorrow.

Mickey, at least it's an incision at your bra line. I've read that some women have had their port placed there! I read that prior to my surgery, and it prompted me to ask the surgeon where my incisions would likely be and where he placed the port. I know at least one woman said she had to have a second surgery to have her port moved. Good grief, you'd think they'd know better. I hope your incision heals quickly and you that you can start to wear your bra comfortably.

About the sutures. I had one that popped out too, and I was told I could cut it myself if it was really bothering me, or I could come in and they'd do it. I put alcohol on my skin around the suture and on the scissors. Then I pressed down gently to make the suture stick up better, and snipped it. The place where the suture popped through stayed red until I clipped it.

Mickey,

I was told not to put anything (medication) on the incision until it is healed. You may want to check with your surgeon regarding using Neosporin.

My incision itched like crazy, and I wasn't allowed to put anything on it. I was told the itching is a sign of healing.

Hmmmm....

Good luck!

Joan

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
