Food sometimes comes up

Recommended Posts

I have had my lapband for 2 months now and have had to adjustments so far. Sometimes when I eat the food gets stuck and I have to throw it up.

Is this because I'm eating it too fast or I'm eating too much?

I try to chew alot and feel as though I'm eating slow.

Also, when you get adjusted the day you get adjusted do you go on liquids only? I remember reading that somewhere.

My dr. has not told me that but I wa just curious if anyone follows that.

95% of the time I keep all the food down and have no problem.

Thanks,

Jimmy

Hey -

I had my first "throwing up" experience the other day too. It was strange, because it wasn't really throwing up as the food didn't come from my stomach (it was just sitting in my esophagus I think) and I didn't have any convulsing that you normally have when you throw up. It was more like "spitting up" than throwing up. First I spit out a huge mouthful of foamy saliva, and then I spit again, but when I did, the food came up. It was very strange. Is this what happened with you?

As far as the diet following a fill, I do 3 days of Clear Liquids, and 2 days of full liquids (and if my fill is in the afternoon, the day of the fill still counts as day one of clear liquids...I generally don't eat before a fill also). Good luck!

It depends when you get the sensation. If you get the stuck feeling after a couple of bites it is probably that you had a bite that was too big or you didn't chew properly.

If it happens at the end of the meal or later it is probably that you ate too much.

Then of course the other possibility is that you ate something that didn't agree with the band. Tough dry meat, skins on fruits/veggies, nuts, dried fruits etc are some of the things that may cause problems even if you are chewing correctly and not eating too much.

I don't know what causes mine, some things are OK at lunch but not at diner. I only come up with slime, not the food. I feel better most of the time after one trip to the toilet, but feel stuffed for hours no matter how much I had actually eaten befor the "incident."

No food 2 hrs. before a fill and liquids after and the next day.

Sometimes the food sits on top of the band and never makes it to the main part of the stomach. I've had those incidences when I've eaten too fast, which let me eat too much, or didn't chew meat properly. I've also had it when I've eaten the tail end of a burrito when it was only tortilla, no filling left.

Most doctors require liquids after, mine does not. I agree with the previous poster. There are many reasons you bring the food back up and it usually depends on when it occurs. String meats/dry meats I avoid, because I usually have a problem with them. Stringy meats I make sure to cut them cross-grain to minimize problems, and who wants to eat dry meat, anyway?
