Banded 9/21 & so ready for mushy stage...call me crazy!

Recommended Posts

Hey there!

I posted this in the September board, but thought I would also put this out there for all you veteran pros!

I know each surgeon is different, but I have been on some form of liquid diet for about 6 weeks now & still have 2 more weeks. I am so ready for some form of food!!!! I'm about to gnaw my arms off!!!! :) Although, I can't be too frustrated since I have lost 24lbs. But still!!!!!

I had to do 4 weeks of Optifast (5 Optifast shakes & one meal per day) & now have been on Clear liquids since the day before surgery. Thankfully, they just added yogurt, pudding, & cream Soups...I feel like I've won the lottery! However, I do not move to the next phase (mushy) foods for another 2 weeks. What mushy foods have you found to be your favorites? I'm putting together my menu now, since all I can do is dream about it!:) Did you blend everything?

Thanks so much for the advice & encouragement!!

I tried blending something once, and it was horrible. I know lots of people do it, but I couldn't handle it. So, I lived on cream of wheat, scrambled eggs, applesauce, baked potatoes (with very little fillings), soft cheese (like Laughing Cow and cottage cheese). You'll get through this phase of Bandster Hell!

I can't handle blended foods either...so my menu looks pretty much like the above one, but I was also able to add really soft flaky fish and I love sweet potatoes...I am still on mushy now. My sugeon is much more lenient than yours....I was banded on the 23rd!

I was banded on sept 22 and gained 3 lbs post surgery. Then I lost 6 lbs in first week. Since then I go between 210lbs and 212 lbs everyday not losing anything more. Starving all the time. Doc has me on full liquids and when I called nutritionist to ask what I can do for hunger she said to do more full liquids! Not helping!!!! Doc appointment is wens. Then mushy. I have cheated with stage 1 chicken and turkey babyfood in last 2 days, but still never full. Help!

I was banded on 9-21-09 and Im doing great so far. I was on a full liquid diet for 2 weeks. I had my Protein Shakes made with super skim milk, Protein bullets, Water, flavored water, Jello, baby food stage 1 (bananas and apple sauce only for me =))), sugar free jello, pudding, pop cycles and fudge cycles and cream Soups made with super skim milk. I never got hungry or tired of the choices. I never had a problem getting my protein in. Now today I get to add phase 3 to that. I do have a question though. They tell you to drink/sip 2-4 oz at a time but what about eating? Like now I can start eating cream of wheat, oatmill, grits, over cooked veggies, soups with veggies, eggs, blenderized meats (not me) ect. Are we soposed to keep the food intake to 2- 4 oz's at a time as well? OR where its soft enough or liquid enough to go on through do we just make sure we dont over eat....I didnt really think about it. Dont know if I should measure or just stop when satisfied.

I love chilli, so I bought some at Wendy's and threw it in the Magic Bullet. It tasted like chilli but the texture was a little weird. BTW, everyone whould own a Magic Bullet - makes great Protein Shakes, smoothies, etc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
