Very Upset still after severe complications with surgery

Recommended Posts

I've become a little depressed since my surgery, due to some very severe complications during surgery. Although I was told Laproscopy would work for me, I woke up last Weds to 4 laproscopic inscisions and 25 staples down my stomach. Apparently an artery was cut attempting to complete the surgery laproscopically and I lost about a Liter of blood, needing a blood transfusion. So now I look down at my stomach and see lots of staples and 4 other inscicions that really don't look too attractive.

I'm starting to wondering if this was all worth it since I basically had more severe complications than most (there is much more to the story then mentioned)

Any helpful advise out there??? Anyone with similar problems?

I'm so sorry to hear you had a bad experience... i cannot relate in any way. i am still in pre-op stage. I hope everything gets better from this point on. you made the decision to have the band for a reason.. don't foget that. you unfortunately went through some major complications...but i feel everything happens for a reason. you may not know it right now.. but maybe it will make sense in the future. this experience is still so new.. give it time. you're going to do great.

i hope you feel better soon.

Im so sorry to hear about your complications. That must have been a very startling way to wake up! Despite your initial setback, I have a feeling with time you will not regret your decision:) Keep focussed on why you wanted the operation in the first place. I have lost almost 50 lbs, just 1/3rd my weight, and I would already do this again a million times. I wish you luck!

I am so sorry to hear this news. It's rather starling to awake to more incisions than expected. I hope your recovery will go well for you.

Just keep in mind the "WHY" you wanted to do this surgery and hopefully it will all be a success story in the end. Don't worry about the scars for now. Just keep your mind on the goal.

I'm sorry that you had such an unpleasant experience. I believe that with time you will feel much better. Just stay prayerful and positive. I know that is easier said than done but, it will start to get better. The worse should certainly over.

I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and was forced to stay overnight. I was the first in surgery that day and the last to leave! So I spent New Years Eve in the hospital.

As you continue your journey I wish you great success. Please keep me posted on your progress.

I'm sorry to hear about your complications. Focus on healing, getting better and stronger. I'm not thrilled about my scars either, I understand yours are worse than mine but, there a very few people who see me completely naked. My husband, my doctor, spa techs.... The scars will fade and I know I will be much happier being healthy and lookin' hot & sexy in my new skinny clothes!!! You will too!

Wish you a speedy recovery and keep us posted!

It's always frustrating when life doesn't go exactly the way we wanted or expected it to, but as so many have already said, just remind yourself why you chose to have this done.

My doctor told me what 'usually' happens but also said that there is a small risk (with any surgery) that something will not go as planned and you may wake up and find they had to go a non-laparoscopic route. Rarely happens, but it does happen.

I usually try to find the amusing side of life. Helps me deal with the stressful times. I don't mean to offend, but I can imagine looking down at my own stomach and fretting over a horrible looking incision...but then if I think about it long enough will fast forward to dozens of pounds lost and a sagging belly. The incision will be the least of my 'ugly' worries.

Hi,

I also had unique complications (1 out of 5000 chance). My colon was cut by the laproscopic instrument. My surgery took 3 times as long and they actually debated whether or not to place the lapband because of increased infection risk.

I did not have extra external stitches, but I had internal stitches, extra hospital time, lots of bloodwork and antiobiotics and a longer recovery time until I felt up to going back to work.

Even with all of that the thing I am most grateful about is that they actually did place my band. I know how upset you are to be "the one with complications". But, on the other hand, you now have a band...focus on that and achieving your weight loss goals. In time your scars will heal and fade and your pounds will melt away. Try to keep your eye on the long term and not the immediate.

Hang in there! Just think, if this is all it takes to get you healthy and to be able to live a long, full life then isn't it worth it? Even though it was very unfortunate and unplanned, worse could've happened and it WILL pay off! Keep your chin up:):frown:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
