questions about pre-op diet and hospital stay

Recommended Posts

I am being banded on the 28th. I have not heard anything from my doctor about fasting prior to surgery. Does everyone have to fast or go on liquid diet before hand, or are the requirements different for everyone?

Also, curious about length of stay in the hospital after surgery. I am being told I can be in and out of the hospital in less than 23 hours.

Not every doctor requires a pre-op diet, but as far as I know you shouldn't eat anything after midnight the night before your surgery. I think Water is limited to what you need for meds if you take them, but I don't remember for sure. You should get information on your pre-op and post-op diet requirements. Are you scheduled to meet with a nutritionist?

I had surgery around 8 am and was out of the hospital around 2 pm. Some band patients spend the night, so that varies.

I meet with the nutritionist again on the 21st, 1 week before the surgery.

It seems like if you are supposed to be on a pre-op diet they would have told you by now then. Mine was two weeks, but others have shorter pre-op diets, and some have none. Maybe you have a doctor that doesn't require one.

The pre-op diet really varies, I didn't have any restrictions/diet until the day before suregery. Then it was liquids for the rest of the day, nothing after midnight except a sip of Water for meds in the a.m.

I checked in the hopital at 5:30 am, stayed overnight and went home the next afternoon around 3. That varies too, you'll probably find out more when you see the nutritionist.

My doc requires a 2 week liquid diet, but since I don't have may comorbidities, I should be able to go home the same day.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
