How's presurgery diet going?

Recommended Posts

Just checking in to see how everyone else is doing on their presurgery diet. Seems there were quite a few of us starting it.

I've been on it 6 days. Have lost 7 pounds. Should have taken my measurments but I can tell I've lost. When I put my tshirt it went down over my hips  The diet part is ok. I have an image of my mind of my liver "shrinking" and that keeps me going. :)

I have that same image of my liver shrinking in my head! I have almost a week down, and one more to go. I'm losing lots of weight and its going ok. Today I had a lot of cravings though! It was rough, but I knew I couldn't veer off my diet and I didn't. Hopefully tomorrow will be easier!

Wow I guess I am one of the chosen few. My doc said I dont need a pre-op diet. My nutritionist recommended for practice and to get use to... for me to replace 1 meal with a shake. so I grabbed some Isopure on the way home. Will make it my dinner since I am always too tired to cook when I get home these days. lol.

I am on day 5 and was starting to have food cravings. I came here to seek support. UGH! I hate Protein Shakes and do what I have to to get my Protein in, but really having a hard time getting in the calories in.

I'm on day 10 and have lost 9 lbs total -- but the needle hasn't moved in three days! Hopefully it's because I'm about to start my . because the literature says to expect 1-2 lbs weight loss per day and I haven't waivered at all. I've been sticking around 425-475 calories per day with 75-100g of it being Protein.

"Any Whey" Protein powder has been the most useful product I've used so far (1 scoop: 17g Protein, 1g carb, 0g fat, 70 cal). You can add it to drinks, Soups, coffee, etc. I have to have coffee on workdays, so the Any whey and Torani sugar free syrups have worked out OK for "breakfast". My problem is more lunch and dinner. I crave savory foods more than sweet, and there aren't many options available.

My pre-op diet instructions don't mention anything about s/f puddings or cream-style soups being allowed or disallowed so I haven't had any. Man, even some plain ff yogurt would hit the spot right now. *Sigh*

I've been thinking about a pre-surgical "cheat" by going out tonight and having an order of tuna and yellowtail sashimi :), but know I'll feel guilty if I do.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
