Anxiety after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone else has problems with anxiety since surgery?

I have been banded since Jan 12th and have lost 85 pounds.

I have been having a lot of anxiety in the past few months and some weeks it is EVERY day! Today was one of the worst days in a long time. I was in Disneyland and all excited to get into the park and had a mental list of all the things to accomplish before going home at 2pm. Well, at 10am it started. We rode two rides and had to quit. I went full on attack at about 11 and it has been going on with little relief for almost 10 hours. The first 6 hours were MISERABLE.

I have an appointment with my regular doctor and hope that he can help, on Thursday.

Anyone else have these "issues"?

I'm not much of one to answer you since I was only banded on Sept. 14. But I sure did experience anxiety after the surgery. I almost freaked when I took my first couple showers. I've never had an anxiety attack before.

You only mention the theme park as a trigger, and I can understand that. Most rides...you feel the motion in your stomach. I can see why that would cause anxiety. Even if you're unaware of actually thinking it, you've got this band and you're afraid of it slipping, or you bumping the port and something going awry.

I think you will need more than your surgeon to help you deal with this especially since you seem unaware of the causes for the anxiety. You need someone who can help you find out what triggers the attacks, teach you the signs of an oncoming attack and how to ward them off, and you need to learn what you can and can't do with a band so you don't worry when you do things that are perfectly safe.

I wish you the best in getting this under control!

I don't have the problem and your problem is probably not related to the band. By all means talk with your PCP about your anxiety. There are anti-anxiety meds that will help you. Trazadone is one I am very familiar with and it works well. I am a retired psych nurse and we used it a lot with patients with anxiety disorders.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing. You need to get this under control so you can deal with your band/weight loss/better health.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
