Do yourself a favor, don't wait until you get dizzy (or worse, nauseous) to eat.

I don't and I didn't suggest anyone else should either.I was just listing some of the symptoms that a person can possibly get when they are REALLY hungry.

Obviously we should eat before we get to that stage but we also need to be aware that most of the time when we think that we are hungry it is more often than not head hunger. Strange noises coming from your stomach do not mean that you are hungry. Since being banded my stomach makes weird noises all the time. They were so loud the other day whilst i was eating that everyone else could hear them too and it was really embarrassing!

Hi I too was banded on the 24th and I've only been doing shakes, Water, occasional broth and Jello. My stomach will not stop making noises, but I think it's due to all the shakes and not so much hunger. Can't wait to eat real food soon as I'm embarrassed to go out in public with all this noise.. ha ha

Yes...it is far too soon to be worried about feeling hungry. Things will change as you and your band evolve together. Right now try to concentrate on healing. The weight loss part will come when the time is right. Your body has been through a lot! No wonder your tummy is rumbling...it's mad! You probably are hungry too. That is all normal. Just follow your doctors diet plan to help get to where you can start adding more foods...then when the fills start, you will gradually find yourself eating less. This doesn't happen over night, take your time and take care of yourself.

Hello everyone, this is all new to me. I was just banded on Monday 9/28/2009. Today is Friday and it is the first day food came across my mind, not to eat it but just enjoying the smell of it. It's been so difficult for me to get anything down. Honestly, today was the first day that I could get down 1.5 cups of ensure (high protein). Not all at one time, this was an all day process. My family has been really worried about me because I completely stop "eating"/drinking anything. The pains been terrible for me. The gas hurts so badly, even though I walk everyday. I sip on Water and gatorade all day but I have yet to actually finish one bottle of gatorade, lol. 6 to 8 cups, I know I need and want but it's too painful and I don't want to cause any vomiting. My first check-up is on Tuesday and hopefully before then I can get a little more down. Maalox is my new bff, lol.

My guess is that it's a combination of real hunger mixed with head hunger.

With the band, the hunger sensation is satisfied because the nerve endings that tell our brain that were "full" is at the top of the stomach (what a mean trick). So, when the band is giving your good restriction, your good solid meals stay in the pouch long enough to let your brain think we're good and full. The soft foods you're eating are giving you a sense of satiety, but my guess is that there's more to it then that little nerve at the top of our stomach, and the brain is calling for something more substantial than yogurt, for instance. Head hunger has to play a role in this too. One of the beauties of the band is that you have time to work all of this out as you're getting fills.

I have great restriction now, and I stay satisfied for several hours with three 1/2 cup meals/day and a healthy snack. However, after a couple of hours my stomach sometimes gives me a shout out that it wants more food, but drinking a beverage generally knocks that hunger out. Since I'm supposed to be drinking a lot between meals, it makes it easier to not give in to temptation and to get that additional liquid in.

Kiz I'm still unrestricted so not at the point where i can really stick to 1/2 a cup 3 times a day. My doc's guidelines on this is the same but meanwhile I do not think it is possible to eat 3 1/2 cup meals a day and still eat 1000 calories. how many calories do you eat.. do you know your nutritional breakdown?

That was three 1/2 cup meals plus a healthy snack which adds 150 or so calories. I adjust my snack depending on what I've eaten earlier or if I've had added calories from my liquids. For a snack it might be cheese & crackers, Greek yogurt w/ fruit & high Fiber Cereal, tuna on leaf spinach & Tomato, etc. So, yes, I can easily take in 1,000 cals., although since I measure, I don't track calories daily.

I was never a "big meal" eater, I grazed and often on junk food, so smaller servings don't seem so unusual. Also, since I'm eating small healthy meals without all the junk throughout the day, I don't feel like I have to make everything fat free, diet, etc. I eat real cheese not the processed fat free variety, real butter not low cal margarine, etc. I still only drink skim milk because I've used skim so long anything with a higher milk fat content tastes like pure cream to me. I also buy lean cuts of beef. I pick and choose, and that's what I love about the band. We can tailor our meal plans to fit our individual needs, following our doctors recommendations.

Once I hit goal, I can have some Fluid removed from my band, so that I can eat larger portions, but at that, they say the maintenance diet will be 3/4 - 1 cup meals. I'm not there yet, so I don't know if I'll be able to do that or not. If my weight loss stabilizes when I get to goal, which I hope to be in six months, we'll see, I guess.

Also, I take a Multivitamin, Calcium, B12 and Vitamin D drops in the winter. I had my annual blood work done a couple of weeks ago, and I don't have the results yet. I'm calling the doctor Monday for them, because I'm getting bills from the lab, so I'm sure they have the results. If I'm lacking in something, I'll let you know.

I was just banded on Tuesday the 29th. Finding this forum is soooo helpful bc the first few days were rough. I expected to be up and running, but it is Sat. and I am still with "no energy" and bloated all the time! Is this bloating and gas a permanent thing? God, I hope not! Gas-x strips help a little but not for long.

I am having trouble drinking much and I think I am heading for a UTI....I had some broth and a shake today, but don't feel hungry....yet, my stomach is a constant "noise machine"....

it's wonderful to see fellow people that are recently banded.

I will keep up with this thread and see how we all do and how each day brings new change...

Gina-the bloating will not last forever..mine did last for a week though. I was so bloated (i gained 10lbs when i got home from the hospital), i felt like something was wrong because i did not think a person could be this bloated.

It finally went away...I lost the 10 gained + 8 more so far!!

For the ticker just click on mine and it should take you there

I LOVE the greek yogurt but how do you get all that in a half a cup? yogurt, cereail and fruit? I was measuring right when i went to mushies and I eat a lot of fish (yes cooked in butter ... but at a half a cup it was hard to get the calories up there. I do the yogurt with honey and flax seed meal (they said here its a good source of Omega 3 and also helps with the hair loss i keep reading about). I can't wait to be eating a half cup - my first fill is oct 14.

I smash up the berries (blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries) but I'm only adding a small amount, and I also buy the Greek yogurt w/ berries sometimes. I have to get my fiber in, so I mix in Fiber One another high fiber cereal. I also think adding a bit of cereal makes the yogurt stick around to help with satiety. I'm not adding huge amounts, but just enough to add some flavor, bulk and fiber. I have Protein powder that I add to it, but no more than maybe two tablespoons (I just scoop a little into it) for additional Protein if I think I'm a little under in a day. I bought little 1/2 cup storage containers, and as long as I don't overflow it, I know I'm good.

I like the flax seed meal too, but I've never used it in yogurt. I sprinkle it on salad or add to my chili, for instance. I'll try the honey and flax seed meal next time in yogurt. That sounds good.

(Your doctor is the same as mine, but others recommend one cup meals. I just try to follow my doctor's recommendations the best I can.)

Good to know we have the same doctor I always like comparing notes  Do you go to the support groups (you can PM me).

The flax seed in chile w/ cheese in the microwave is AWESOME! THe flax seed gets a nuttier flavor when heated up and gives more texture.

Are you supplementing w/ Protein shakes regularly?

Where do you get the 1/2 cup storage containers. Who makes them? I live on the UWS.

Thank you for telling me....I felt like I was 6 months pregnant! Today is the first day I've felt human! Guess I'm a slow healer...had some creamy, liquid mashed potatoes today and felt better. I know I haven't been eating enough....trying to drink more today. No more pain meds either! Felt like crap on them..

nice to see we are all going through this together!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
