Questions [and a true story!] to all....

Recommended Posts

Hello all, its been awhile since I've been on here.

I come back with a question... anyone ever have to change doctors after your surgery?

Please excuse me while I vent and explain why....

My doctor more or less tortured me ...and found great pleasure in doing so! ha. He'd put too much in my band, to the point where swallowing saliva would set me off into vomitting every 10 minutes. I know I can't take more than .25 cc's at a time, but he INSISTED I was taking it slow because I just wanted to "sit on the couch and eat steak". Yes, he told me this. Why steak? I have no idea. I don't even like meat, with or without the band.

ANYWAY, the last time this occured [this past week] landed me in the emergency room, where myself and my boyfriend called him and begged him to come to the hospital and give me some relief and he flat out refused to see me until morning, knowing quite well that no other doctor would be able to help me. I even drove the hour and a half [pulling over many times] to the hospital most convenient for him to get to.

When I finally saw him in the morning, he told me my problems were "mental" and "emotional" and the band will not work for someone who will not allow it to... I agree! But too bad, I'm not that person.

I was treated like I was eating doritos and fried chicken, meanwhile I couldn't swallow... let alone even dream of drinking or eating anything.

So I have changed doctors. I have someone more local and I have an appointment with my new doc on the 9th. I'm a bit panicked because Dr. Allam [aka Dr. Douchebag] emptied my band so now I have this awful, guilty feeling, like that's automatically going to make me gain 235830589359 lbs. I look foward to starting over, hopefully with someone a little bit more patient-oriented.

I have another question. Is it possible for someone to just naturally have a bad reaction to the band? Like it causes them to get sick, etc.

I truly believe it was just the doc who was getting in the way of my success, I don't think the band isn't for me...:smile2:

Wow! Change Doctors they need to work with you not against you. Find someone who has a lot of experience and we are all different so restriction is a relative term, they did not even want to fill me the first time because my weight loss was good. You may be one that gets good restriction with little fill. So I sorry you had to go through this but good luck on the rest of your journey!

Yor Dr sounds like a meglomaniac sadist. I think finding a new one is a really good idea. Good luck - hope the new guy didn't skip the bedside manner classes like the other one did.

I think everyone needs - and deserves - to be treated by a doctor who treats them respectfully and compassionately. You are doing yourself a great favor by switching, imo, and I hope your new dr. comes through for you. If not, keep looking and find someone who is on your team - this guy sounds combative and nasty.

(I'm in L.I.), btw, who are you switching to?).

Best of luck to you and PLEASE let us know how it goes for you!!

Please change doctors by all means! You have patient's rights and one of them is to be treated right. You also need to make sure the new doctor is completely aware of what has happen to you. Ask him what his plans for your care is going to be. Get a good clear understanding from him.

You also need to file a complaint with the AMA of your state against this doctor. They probably won't do anything but you will feel better.

I agree 100% with what everyone else has said, especially this above.

I was about to say the same thing! What a JERK!!! File a complaint and continue to follow up on it. He put your life at risk. That right there should launch an investigation. Thank God you are ok, it could have been worse!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
