4 Days Post Op Question

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if I should try to take something for my bowels at this point. I've not had a bowel movement since Sept 23 the day before my surgery. Is it too soon because I also had constaption problems and had to took stool softener that didn't work. I don't want to do anything too soon.:smile2:

What you're experiencing isn't unusual. It took me almost 3 weeks after surgery to have a movement. I have read on the site that others also experience this problem. Drink lots of Water, easier said than done...

However, now that I'm eating food again and drinking LOTS of Water things are better than they were prior to surgery - like you, I wasn't regular.

Hang in there.

How do you feel? Do you feel constipated?:smile2:

I didn't have one until 6 days after surgery. I didn't feel constipated, didn't think about it or worry about it, but once it happened I felt SO much better.:smile2:

Check with your doctor regarding this. I had my surgery on Wednesday, 23 September, and was a little concerned so I called my doc. He suggested warm prune juice a couple of times a day and between that, walking and lots of Water, voila, success :smile2:

I had surgery on the 23rd and no ovemnet as of yet...called Dr. today

Spoke to the nurse and she said this is completely normal, but if uncomfortable (an I am) and bloted (yep, big time) then I can take 3tbsp of milk of magnesia and place a heating pad on my abdomen.

I just took the MOM and I am going to drink some hot tea.

Constipation is no fun and it is not healthy. I would check with my surgeon and ask for something to help you go. It will help with the gas and get things moving again. With all the liquids you should be on this soon post op...you should level out fairly quick with a little help!

I would definately check with your Dr, just a call to the receptionist will work they all get these questions regularly.

My Dr's office recommended Miralax. It blends into any clear liquid without making clumps. You don't taste it at all.

I took the 1 cap that they recommended 2 days in a row and I was a mess, terrible diarrhea. But I cut it down to 1/2 cap every day and things have been "working out" fine.

But CHECK WITH YOUR DR, he might want you to try something else.

That's how it was for me too. I was so tired of running to the restroom. As soon as I went on mushies and solids...all was well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
