calories during mushy stage? Frustrated!!

Recommended Posts

Ok I had my two week post op appt today and I've only lost 5 flippin lbs! How is that possible when I've been eating 600-900 cals a day and no real food?! Wtf?? I've seen that others have lost anywhere from 10-20lbs. It's just really frustrating when you've been starving yourself and have nothing to show for it! :tongue2: I also start mushy foods today and now I'm scared that I'll gain weight since I'll be eating more food. How many calories has everyone been eating while on the mushy stage? My nurse today told me to stay around 800 cals and to eat 1/2 a cup of food 3 times a day. That just doesn't seem like enough to me and how are you supposed to get in your Protein and everything with three measley 1/2 cups of food a day???

I also need some ideas for mushy food. Tonight I had refried Beans and the ready to eat chicken salad and didn't blenderize any of it. Do you have to put everything in the blender even if you don't have a problem getting it down how it is? Any insight on all of the above is much appreciated!!!

This is your healing time you shouldn’t worry weather or not you lose weight. You need to worry about healing fully then after you heal then the work begins. I haven’t been banded yet, but am very excited. Try not to look at your scale during the healing process it will probably get frustrating since I hear most gain weight during the mushies. I know that everyone want to began to lose weight right away but before any of that you need to heal :) don’t worry it will happen don’t freak :) you will get to your goal weight.

:tongue2:

Blaze is right - this is a time for healing. There are many reasons why most of us go through this and either lose little, nothing, or gain during this period:

- you just had surgery and are likely swollen

- you are retaining Fluid because your body is trying to heal

- your body thinks you are starving it and is hanging onto every little calorie you give it at this point.

Give yourself some time and follow your doc's instructions. Once you start getting fills and restriction the weight loss will happen.

My meal size slowly increased as my appetite returned. While on the mushy stage my calories were at 800-900. I ate whatever I made for my hubby, just ran it through the Magic Bullet. At one point my nutritionist told me to try to increase my calories to about 1000-1100 as I could -as we really do need a healthy amount of calories for weight loss. It gets easier to get the Protein in as your appetite returns. I think I was eating about 1 cup of food at each meal and my doc's office okayed a glass of milk between meals (protein) if needed. Of course, check with your physician's office about this or any other questions you have. Don't deviate from their instructed plan for you unless they okay it.

Even though you are able to eat things without blending them, I would suggest you not. It's not that it's not physically possible to soft solids or even solids as they are, but you shouldn't. You've probably read it a thousand times, but when you eat more solid foods your stomach has to work much harder (agitating like a washing machine) to digest the food. Too much of that and you could tear sutures loose that are holding the band in place. Take it easy on your stomach and band. It's only a short period of time - so take the time to mush your foods - I used my Magic Bullet constantly during this period. Better to be safe than sorry. JMO!

Hang in there- you seem to be right on track with what most of us experience!!!

i asked this exact question to my nutritionist. First you can't possibly get enough Protein on 1/2 cup of food. She told me to try and aim for 80-90 grams. She said the focus is healing and the important part is to eat the pureed food and I can eat 1 cup if after i eat the 1/2 cup I am still hungry.

I love love love lemon sole pan fried w/ a pat of butter and a whole lemon - this yoou can eat just mash it up.

noodleless lasagna - low fat ricotta, mozzarella and Pasta sauce (its a bit high calorie though another poster told me i can find lower calorie ricotta)

tuna but not loving that

Soups - lentil, potato leek (blend the lemon sole in the late)

egg salad or scrambled eggs

greek 0% yogurt

I am going to make chili (burger Beans and spices then blend it)

refried beans w/ melted cheese

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
