I'm new to this....bear with me! I'm researching the band surgery, found this website and think I'll be here often. Everyone seems very supportive of everyone else. I actually went for a pre-cert visit for the RNY surgery and submitted to my insurance, but backed out, it just seemed a whole lot more drastic a change than I was willing to go for. I have been heavy all my life, come from a big catholic and german family background, when our family gets together for reunions it's all about food. My mother weighs over 350 pounds, she's 5' 3" tall. My dad weighs a good 275 or more. My older brother is probably 280 or better. I'm 5' 6" and weigh 308. My family has high blood pressure, feet and knee problems, my mom has already had two strokes, my dad has prostate cancer, and there is lupus in our family. I have decided my children will be able to remember a time when their mom was "skinny" and able to do things with them. Right now I can't tie my own shoes without being red in the face and struggling to get my feet on my knees to tie 'em. I've got a super supportive husband who stands by me no matter what size I am, he always says he met me and fell in love with me big, not small, and he just wants me to be happy. (Gotta love those Texas boys!) I think the last straw for me came when I took the teens to Six Flags, and couldn't fit in the roller coaster seat. God is that ever embarrassing or what.........Anyway, I love to talk, so ya'll will probably be hearing from me often......Glad I found this site!

A huge welcome from Australia Momoffive - it is a scary decision to make however with help and support of many people it is a little easier. I am only new myself but feel free to ask any questions and I shall see if I can answer them.

Thanks to all for the welcome!! I heard from someone via e-mail that just had the band done, looking forward to talking with her as she progresses! Just found out from my insurance you have to be "morbidly obese" for them to cover the surgery, my BMI is a 49.7.......I think that's me...LOL. Unfortunately I also found out our insurance is changing and can't do anything with this until January. Dang it......:think

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
