stopping hrt before surgery?

Recommended Posts

I see my dr tomorrow & will ask this but in the mean time---I'm reading thru the info I was given about pre-and post-surgery.

It says I need to stop taking any hormone replacement medications for one month prior to surgery, one week minimum. (I"m hoping to have surgery in 2 weeks if ins. approves it)

Has anyone else had to stop their hrt, and if so, why? I had total hysterectomy 2 years ago. Won't this cause me to have hot flashes and other symptoms?

As Mimi said, it's the hormone/clot issue. Hot flashes are a pain but better than clots.

thats interesting b/cause I had knee surgery (scope type) in the spring and NO ONE told me to stop taking the hrt before surgery.

Sooo, do I take it after surgery at some point? I guess I dont know when I should just stop taking it for good ......

I can only guess that your WLS surgeon is more geared to problems/post op complications as related to obesity and is being very thorough? Also depending on how you were "recovered" post your knee surgery, clots may not have been as likely.

As to when to stop/start pre and post op, ask your surgeon. As to when to quit altogether; I think that would be up to you with input from your gynecologist!

Wow thats a new one to me they never told me to stop taking my hormones and they were very specif about what not to take. Oh well follow the directions of your doc they know best and good luck on your journey!

I"m scheduled to see a new gyn this week as well. The one who did my hyster. just said I'd be on the hrt the rest of my life but he is "old school"

I've never been told to stop the hrt before any other surgery so that threw me for a loop (so to speak) when I read it in drs orders for pre-surgery. Will see what the surgeon says tomorrow

So, surgeon says it's b/cause of the risk of blood clots w/wls. I"ll stop my med a week before surgery and deal w/the Migraines and other issues that will cause.

Again, scares me that my knee surgeon didnt require this b/cause that surgeon kept telling me to watch for signs of blood clots!

My surgeon told me it was a 1 in million chance of having clots/bleeding issues, but he didn't want ME to be the 1! He asked me to stop using my estrogen for one week BEFORE and 3 weeks AFTER my surgery. Other than a few minor hot flashes (surgery was in November), I didn't have any problems. Good luck.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
