Amy Stew 0 Posted September 20, 2009 Ya so I'm in soft foods and I had tortilla chips with a bean dip the other day and I am fine because I chew very well. Why is it so important to have soft foods? Is it okay if you chew well. I also have had chicken, but it was pretty mushy. I dunno I have just been struggling with the soft food thing and I needed a break. i hope i didn't mess anything up. I had surgery Aug. 28th...and I am on regular foods next week sometime. I just want some advise I guess.
LindaD 3 Posted September 20, 2009 The main reason for eating restrictions is to give your stomach a break on working so hard to digest, the way I understand it. It's not about how well you chew, it's about going with foods that your stomach won't have to WORK to process. Soups and liquids don't require nearly as much digesting work as solids, even well-chewed ones. I was VERY hungry a few days after surgery and I called my doctor and the office told me I could go with oyster crackers. To let them pretty much dissolve in my mouth. That carried me over until I got to mushy foods. I'm not opposed to occasionally breaking or stretching a rule but I think it's important to try to understand WHY the rule is there before you choose which if any to break or how far to push/stretch. Good luck.

bambam 0 Posted September 21, 2009 Amy - When you eat "regular" foods your stomach has to churn to digest them - much like a washing machine does. (I'm borrowing from Restless Monkey here.) That churning could cause the sutures that hold your band in place to come undone, which can result in the band slipping. The reason for the slow progression to solid foods is to allow your band to heal in place. Do your best to follow your doc's instructions I know it's hard but you can do it!! This is only for a short period of time (even though it seems forever) and before you know it you'll be past it and back to regular foods.
