I can't burp but feel like I NEED to!!

Recommended Posts

I was banded 3 days ago and all is well besides a couple side effects...I feel like I need to burp and I cant! I feel like I have a baseball sized burp in the top of my stomach! Has anyone else had this? I am also now fighting diarrhea. I am still on Clear Liquids (sugar free). Any suggestions?

Diarrhea isn't uncommon; it's caused from your diet, the anesthesia, etc. Don't worry about it; mine lasted about a week. It's not fun but it's better than being constipated! If you're still worried on Monday you can call your doc but you should be fine.

As to the burp, that isn't uncommon either. Don't drink with straws (if you are) and take some liquid tylenol (or whatever your doc adivised) to help. I wouldn't take gas x unless he told you it was ok, but the simethecone should break down the gas.

The surgery reconfigures you internally. Until your body overcomes the surgery etc it isn't uncommon to be unable to burp. Believe me, the ability will return! Oh boy will it return! :blushing: Hang in there

I felt the same way about burping post-op. It was pretty uncomfortable for a while but the feeling did go away about day 10 after surgery. It is completely normal so don't worry about it. Like restless said, don't drink with straws.

I was banded on the 14th and had horrible diarrhea for a few days, that will pass. I also had the urge to burp. My dr had me using the gas x strips. Those helped a lot.

I was banded 3 days ago and feel like I need to burp, but it just won't find its way out. It has a weird feeling, like this huge air bubble under my ribcage, somewhat painful, but subsides after a few seconds. I haven't been able to have a BM yet. I am still on clear liquids, so you would think something would be happening. The hospital sent me home without nausea med, so I was pretty miserable today. I ended up having to call the doc and get some called in. Once I took it, I was feeling better. Most of my gas pain is gone except for the occassional left shoulder pain. So far I am doing well. I ended up having a larger hiatal hernia repair at the same time, so recovery is going to take a tad bit longer. I had a 2 for the price of 1 surgery..lol.

Hope everyone is doing well! Can't wait to begin my journey!

I found that when I was walking around every hour, it helped to hold my hands up in the air and then to my sides (just kind of moving them around) to loosen things up. Day three was burp city. I could've put most men to shame!! LOL

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
