Congrats and good luck on your journey!!! I was with Kaiser Harbor city, but they denied me twice, after doing everything they asked. Changed to PPO and was banded on Aug 21st. my whole process took one month! but i am just one person, again congrats!

Welcome to the Options program! I have 4 classes left to go. But mine is 24 weeks, they just recently shortened the program to 20, so lucky you.

I'm curious, they told us a few weeks ago that Kaiser has stopped the lapband. I'm getting the sleeve, so it didn't matter to me, but what did they tell you in orientation?

I think my surgery will be either at Harbor City or West LA, and I'm all the way in Corona which is an hour away.

It's good that you're on here, because I think I've gathered more information from these forums about the lapband than I did in the Options classes. They seem to only talk about the RNY (bypass). The nutrition information is good though, and the emotional eating part was helpful.

Good Luck!

In the orientation I attended the counselor said that Lap-Band was an option. However she did say that we should be open to the sleeve and Gastric bypass. She explained that some patients would do better with these procedures. That the doctors would go over the options and explain which option was better for you. I have two cousins who had the gastric bypass. They both had many complications. It was a few years ago. The Lap-Band seems to be less risky.

Thanks mb20mom I am looking forward to the classes

Hi,

I also went through the Kaiser Options program, at the Sunset location in LA. You will get a lot of good information, not only about weight loss but how to live a positive and productive life in general. I would say to FOLLOW THE PROGRAM, you will pretty much get a step by step guide about what to do each week, and try to stay on track or you will reach the end of the class trying to lose your 10% (like me). There are lots of labs that need to be done, as well as a meeting with a psychologist and nutritionist. Not as bad as it sounds though. I have completed the entire program and labs, and am just waiting to consult with the surgeon. I would also say to start taking Vitamins now, because they will not operate if you have ANY deficiencies. Oh and BTW, Kaiser is very much for lap band as a last resort, and sees the gastric bypass procedure as the "gold standard. " Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
