Anyone banded with a cold?

Recommended Posts

I have a cold, and a slight cough and am scheduled to be banded on Monday. No fever, and have started antibiotics and cold medicine... anyone's surgeon say no because of this?

If you have a cold (caused by a virus) you shouldn't be taking the antibiotics. They only work on bacterial infections.

If you have congestion they may very well postpone; too dicey for the anesthesia. Since lap band is elective (ie your immediate life doesn't hang in the balance) it's best if they let you heal. Plus you don't want surgery if you have an infection running around internally.

They'll postpone. I was rescheduled for a thyroidectomy for the same reason. They won't put anyone under who's health isn't in its tip top condition. I was so mad because it was only a mild case, barely more than the sniffles, and it was my first surgery and I was scared to death. It would have been all overwith but I had to carry on a few more fear filled weeks.

In agreement about antibiotics too, they should never be taken for virusus and I don't understand why a doctor would prescribe them for that. I have this argument with a friend all the time, she takes antibiotics for every little thing. She'll build up a tolerance to them and then when she REALLY needs for something them they may not work.

Mine was rescheduled due to bronchitis - I was feeling better but they wouldn't do my surgery until I had finished my antibiotics. It was only postponed 5 days and ended up being a blessing. Can't imagine coughing after surgery...it would have hurt too much.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
