Might be a dumb question but...

Ok, I am new and still researching this WLS.

So here is my question: From reading the WLS boards, why do the RNY patients seem to loose weight faster than lapbanders. I realize they are re-routing the intestines, but isn't the stomach pouch the same size (after you get to your restriction point).

Don't both groups have to follow the same rules, chew, chew chew, no white products (bread, sugar, etc.).

IF both groups are consuming high protien, low fat, then why the difference?

I am not a NUT (and I mean nutritionist not the other kind), but why so big differences??

RNY patients don't SEEM to lose faster, they DO lose faster. They have restriction from the start (most of us Lap Banders don't) AND they have malabsorption. Lap Banders don't. Many RNY'ers have dumping syndrome and so avoid sweets. Lap Banders don't. RNY'ers lose most of their weight the 1st year. Lap banders can, but we can also continue to lose, well, as long as it takes.

I have no idea if RNy'ers have to avoid bread etc but not all lap banders do. Further, the Protein first thing is a guideline, not a requirement. You can sit and eat Cookies and chase them with milkshakes all day with lap band, if you want to.

A seminar run by a good surgeon will help you sort it all out.

The only foods RNYers need to avoid is sweets and heavy fats, if they dump. They have smaller stomachs, but not a restricted opening like Lap Banders do. I have to avoid a lot of starches because they just don't get through the band and sit on top. Very uncomfortable. I haven't tried bread yet, but I ain't tempting fate.
