Hi All,

My surgery date of 9/21/09 has been postponed. My initial consultation was in July and the surgeon told me to lose 40 pounds. Two weeks later my husband had a heart attack (hospitalized for 8 days) and I coped the only way I really knew how.... I gained 10 pounds. So, fast forward to 9/7/09, when I started Optifast in prep (2 wks) for surgery...I completed 10 days of the liquied diet and lost 14 #s...but only 4, according to the dr due to the 10 pound weight gain. So, I've been out off until 10/20/09 so I can lose 30 more pounds. I'm glad the surgeon is being firm but I also feel depressed about it. My husband is fine, btw, and I feel less stressed now. So, I guess I continue to diet and now I will also exercise. Please, say something nice to me. I haven't cried yet but I'm kinda close to it...

Hey Paperplane, you've been through the wringer, but you're hanging in there. I know it has to be hard not to get your original surgery date, but you're going to be much healthier going into surgery by having it postponed for a few weeks. I wish you much luck in losing the weight. I'm very thankful for you that your husband is doing well now.

(Go ahead and have a good cry. Sometimes it's the best stress reliever).

I feel for you but may I also suggest some therapy? Life is stressful and it happens (although fortunately not often as scary as your DH's heart attack) and it is important to learn better ways than "food" to deal with it. I know this because it's something I too struggle with. Good luck! Try not to be too depressed; just look at it as a chance to really be ready!

Hi Paperplane! Sorry to hear about your husband and glad he's on the mend. I totally understand your disappointment. I had surgery scheduled for 8/27 and then it was cancelled on 8/25. Very disappointing. I have had to find a new surgeon and start again from scratch.

I'm feeling a bit unmotivated right now. But I'm still very positive on my feelings for this WLS. I know it's the right thing for me but maybe the time hasn't been right yet. Though I have no surgery date, I'm still exercising every day and eating healthy. I would be doing that regardless of having surgery. I've made up my mind that this is what I'm going to do and how I'm going to live my life. Sure, there'll be bad days and I'm sure I'll make poor food choices . But, before I eat something that isn't healthy I'm gonna stop and really think about it. It's important to deal with head hunger, emotional eating and stress eating. I agree with RestlessMonkey in that you may want to consider talking with someone about eating while stressed out. It's something that can be dealt with . Having a better handle on it may even improve the outcome of your surgery and weight loss journey. Maybe the cancellation of your original date has some benefits. That's how I'm looking at my situation. It was the right surgery, but the wrong doctor and the wrong center. It's giving me an opportunity to explore all kinds of things associated with successful weight loss and becoming healthier and happier.

I wish you much luck in your journey. I know how disappointed you are - been there . Hang in there and best wishes.:tt1:

Hi Paperplane..I can imagine how disappointed you must have felt to have your surgery postpone especially after all of you have gone through (the lonnnnnng process) to get to the point of getting a date, but you will be fine. You will get your surgery because you have already shown you have what it takes to lose weight without surgery which in itself something I truly admire about all pre-op patients. Thank goodness your husband is fine and now you can turn your focus back on yourself. When I started this journey I prayed long and hard figuring if this is in God's plan for my life, it will happen regardless of delays, disappointments and even my own self doubts. I do not have a date as of yet, but I am at the end of the pre-op process and will hopefully get a date soon. Although I was not told to lose any initial weight, I have gained about 10 lbs since my first consult, and I am finding it difficult to get it off. So I am willing to accept that if my surgery is postponed as a result, its because I need time to get more focused, or maybe even, as in your case, God knows I might be needed elsewhere for a moment. So stay encouraged and please keep us posted.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband and your surgery. But honey remember for every bump in the path there is a reason. Something could have happened if it would have gone the way it was supposed to. Life has a funny way of telling us not to do something at that moment and "moves" it for us. . ever been driving somewhere and the route you usually take, your inner voice says not to go that way this time. . so you go another way and find out later something bad happened on that route? Be happy this all happened how it did, heartbreaking yes, but it could have been worse. . . at least you still have your husband and a surgery date right!:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
