I miss salads so much!

Recommended Posts

I really do miss salads. I've had such a hard time eating at all, that I'm almost scared to even try. I can't wait until I can eat a greek salad again with a little extra feta cheese to increase the Protein.

I ate 1/3 of a cup whole grain Cereal today and had no problems, which surprised me. So maybe next weekend, I'll make a very small greek salad!

Chew it up like anything else and you should be fine. Eat the darker greens instead of iceberg lettuce since iceberg lettuce pretty much doesn't offer any nutrition at all. There are lots of other lettuces that are better for you (and actually have some taste, as opposed to iceberg, LOL).

And not all salads have lettuces of any kind. Dice up a nice Tomato, seed a cucumber and dice some of that. Add a little onion, some chopped basil and a really good vinagrette (forget light; go for the "real" stuff because you don't need but just a drizzle. Now, that's a salad. Want to add a little Protein to it? Add some fresh mozzarella, which is nothing like the mozzarella they put on pizza....it's soft and tasty. If you can find it, buy the "buffalo" mozzarella which is really made from buffalo milk and that's really good stuff.

And, yeah, love that greek salad. Kalamata olives, feta, some slivers of pepperoncini....I can taste it now.

I had an unfill about 3 weeks ago and haven't even tried a salad during this time. I had been craving salad prior to the unfill but wasn't able to tolerate it. I'm scheduled for a fill on Tuesday, maybe I'll try to have one on Monday.

Good luck and be careful. Lettuce is not my friend! I've tried to shred the lettuce and chew it up really good. it always comes up....sometimes even 2 hours later. Sorry to disgust you!

Just try it, you will probably be surprised.

I can eat iceberg lettuce very easily, and especially if I slice it like you would cabbage for coleslaw, rather than just pull the leaves off. The darker green lettuces and salad mixes I have a bit more trouble with, they're tougher and dont chew up as well (less Water in them probably) but they're more nutritious of course, so I tend to mix them.

I'm not real worried about nutrition right now since I'm taking lots of Vitamins. I just want to be able to eat more things than Soup, chili, roast beef hash, tuna, etc. I'm going to go with mostly iceburg with some romaine. Lots of feta cheese, some Tomato, cucumber, onion and Kalmata olives with olive oil/balsamic vinegar dressing.

If I can handle this, I'll be so happy. I'd love to be able to have a small salad a day. I haven't been able to eat many veggies at all until last week.

I love salads and eat a wide variety of salad vegetables. Greek salad is a favourite of mine although I find romaine a bit tough so use other more tender dark salad leaves, baby spinach, lambs lettuce and mix a little iceberg in to crisp it up a little.

I eat at least one salad every day. I can't eat iceberg lettuce even if it's soaked in dressing...it just won't stay down.

I buy either the hearts of romine, spring mix or just the romaine in the package. I dice the lettuce up even smaller than what is in the package.

Add a little Tomato, perdue diced chicken, a little feta, a little seeded cuke and that's pretty miuch my lunch.< /p>

I've began asking the waiter at restaurants if their salad is iceberg or romaine...if they iceberg....I order something else.

Good luck...if you are like me, you will find your band is fickle. One day I can eat something and a few days/weeks later...up it comes.

I find that I'm more likely to tolerate a salad when:

1) I'm eating later in the day

2) I'm eating alone, with no schedule and can take all the time in the world.

3) My only focus is eating

4) After working out

5) In the privacy of my own home, when I'm not worried about people seeing me get sick.

I still have issues with cucumbers and tomatoes---or anything else with very fibrous skin and seeds. My salads are typically just lettuce with a few sprinkles of shredded carrots and feta cheese. I just missed having them, so it isn't about the nutritional aspects. I just craved them!

Just a thought--you mentioned getting another fill. Are you sure you want one if you can't tolerate eating a simple salad? I had an unfill earlier this summer and it made all of the difference in the world. I've returned to the world of eating vegetables!

I am NOT getting another fill. I go in this Thurs. Was supposed to have another fill 3 weeks ago, but cancelled appt. I just want them to make sure everything is ok this week. Not letting them fill me. It's only been a week since I've been able to eat more than mushies after my fill the last week of July. It takes me at least 3 weeks for the swelling to go down after a fill, so I'm in no hurry, and I've lost 15 pounds since the last week of July, so I think things are ok for now. (I've gone from a size 22 to 16 in that time also, I love Pilates!)

I don't eat in public at all. I figure it may be a year before I get there, especially since I have to wait 15 minutes after the first 2 bites, before I can really eat.

I got the salad ingredients this morning. I'm going to try a salad late this afternoon. I'll let you know how I do.

Lisa, hope you don't have any problems with the salad. Its hard giving up foods we really enjoy. So far I haven't had any problems with lettuce - probably because I know it can be a problem for some, so I'm more conscious to chew more.

My nut advised eating iceberg or romaine, as the softer lettuce leaves can sometimes cover the stoma opening. I have eaten baby spinach, and not had an issue. Who knows? As they say, everyone is different...

I had my salad! No problems whatsoever. It was a little less than 1 cup. I shredded iceberg and a little romaine into coleslaw type pieces. Cut the olives, cucumbers, Tomato & onion into tiny pieces. Lots of crumbled feta cheese, and lots of olive oil/balsamic vinegar dressing.

It was AWESOME! Next time I might add some tofu crumble to give it a little more protein!

So glad to hear it! When you're feeling more comfortable, stop cutting up your food so small. Start leaving pieces larger so that you'll be able to start eating like other people do. Just think about how nice it will be to eat a salad at a restaurant with friends!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
