is it possible to have restriction without a first fill?

Recommended Posts

hi

I had my band inserted on 25 Aug 09 and I am due to have my first fill next Saturday, the strange thing is...I am not the slightist bit hungry today! I am still in the mushy food stage and when I woke up today, I did not feel like eating, so not like me!

after about 6 hours, I decided I had better eat something and I forced myself to eat some scrambled egg but was very full when eating it. about 5 hours later, I had some of a weightwatchers fish pie. I am stuffed all day!

I have lost about 21 pounds since my first consultation and I am very happy about it

I am wondering if I should have my first fill next week or should I wait? I am self pay and my package includes 4 fills, I don't want to use up my quota of fills unnecessarily, can some please give me some advice?

I read that some people go 9mths without the first fill because they're losing. I have good restriction too. I was banded 8/27/09. My doctor is strict on waiting 6 weeks before the first fill and I thought that would be imposible, but I have lost 11 pounds already and that's awesome.

I agree. I was talking to a guy in the waiting room at my doc's office and he's been losing for 6 months without a fill. My surgeon also waits 6 weeks but I have to wait 8 because of his vacation schedule. :)

thanks for replying.

if you still have good restriction when you are due to have you first fill and you are still losing weight, are going to go ahead with the fill anyway?

I thought I had good restriction...... and once I was exactly 1 month out from surgery, I could definitely feel that I didn't have it anymore. I was steadily losing until I was allowed to go on to regular foods. Once that happened, I have been bouncing up and down between 305 - 310 ever since. Some days up, some days down.

I'm due for my fill on Friday, and am certainly ready for it!!

if only.....

I forgot my advice! Since you're self pay, and you have good restriction, and you're actually not at 6 weeks post-op until October... I'd wait. Once you find you can eat more, and the scale reflects a plateau, THEN I'd schedule.

Just my opinion :mad2:

Yeah if I stall in wheight loss I will fill at 6 weeks. But I would be afraid of getting too tight. The horror stories of being too tight and getting food stuck are pretty groos.

I am 3 weeks out from surgery today and I can tell that I could eat just about anything. Not that I am going to do that, but nothing has not gone down easily, and it seems to get easier every day.

My doctor gives his first fill at 4 weeks, but I think he is conservative and does a little bit at a time, I'll find out I guess. My first fill is on August 24th, one week.

For the last week since I started on soft foods/solids I haven't lost any weight, just gone up and down the same pound. I am hoping that by adding more exercise this week I will push it down a couple pounds before my first fill, but.. we'll see! I haven't been eating very much at all. My metabolism is probably a bit slow after the liquid diet for so long... I just need to remember it is a long term solution not a short term fix. :tt1:

That is me too right now. My weight loss chart on the daily plate website looked great at first... a nice long downhill line connecting all of the dots. Now it looks more like a mini mountain range. :)

I'm 4 week post and I have no hunger at all. I eat because I know I have to. I was scheduled for a fill on Wednesday, but I called and talked to the dr and was told to cancel since I am still losing a pound every 3 days. It's a good rate for me and since I don't have any hunger, it's easier to choose good foods. He said that if that changes, to call and re-schedule. I drink tons of Water between meals, so that might help with my non-hunger state.

So I would call you doctor and see what he says.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
