Yuckyyyyyyyyyyy Stuff

Recommended Posts

I have had a tummy bug for the last 3 days, the first day I was doing alot of heaving, this was while I was at the conference so was going to go to the Dr when I got home. The nausea stopped after a day and the poo poo started. I havent stopped, and the tummy cramps are soooo bad. I went to the chemist and asked if there was something I could take. I told them about the band and they said with the band they would not give me anything unless I had a letter from my surgeon. Unfortunately that isnt possible, so I will get through this, I am keeping up the fluids, I just wanted to know if anyone knows if the tummy cramps are actual cramps where our bands are and could they cause a slippage if powerful enough.

Sorry if this sounds silly, I would just like to be more safe than sorry.

TIA

You don't have any over the counter remidies? The two main brands here are Pepto Bismal (the pink stuff) and Imodium.

Talk to a different chemist and just ask for something for diarea.

Yep, it was the over the counter immodium that the chemist wouldnt give me. I might try another one and see what they say. Thanks anyway :)

Don't tell them about your band. It's not important in this case. As long as you can get it past your stoma and into your system, there is no band issue.

The only warning I would have about the Immodium is that if you truly have a stomach bug, a virus, causing your bowels to cramp and causing diarrhea, it's best to let it pass until the virus is out of your system. Your body is trying to cleanse itself and the diarrhea is how it's doing it. Let nature run it's course and you will recover more quickly. If you interfere and stop the diarrhea, you leave the virus in there to prolong your misery. Now, if the diarrhea is caused by something you ate, or travel, or a different schedule, different water/food...the Immodium might just be the ticket.

I'm also thinking that bowel cramping won't bother the band at all. Stomach scramping, however, may. But unless you are vomiting relentlessly for days, I'd think you should be okay? JMHO.

At least get some Gastrolyte into you. YOu can get it in liquid or icypole form. It is amazing how much better you feel when you balance up your electrolytes again.

I cant figure why you couldnt have Immodium (or Buscopan for the cramps) but I agree, I usually only start that if the diarrhoea continues after the illness has passed, give your body a chance to expel the bugs - you know how it sometimes takes a week or more to ah, firm up a bit downstairs. It can be really annoying when you're stuck in a supermarket queue, lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
