Ughhhh ...when does the burping stop?

Recommended Posts

I am 2 days post-op and burping like crazy to get rid of the gas in my stomach....

Please tell me it gets better and the burping eventually goes away....

Sorry to tell you but it doesn't go away for some people. I am a month out and am still doing it. Not as much as I was but it's still there. At least now I can feel it coming and am prepared for it.

My neighbor is 4 months out and she still does it too.

Sorry, but I am 10 months out and still doing it! It was less until I had my first fill, now more often. As long as the pounds come off, I will deal with it. Barb

I would love to be able to finish my burps. Rarely can I get one all the way out! It gets part way and then stops!!!! So be thankful you can have a complete one!

I feel your frustration! I was banded on 9-4-09, and I had HORRIBLE burping issues for the first 6-7 days, and then it got a bit better. I am still burping, but now only after I eat or drink. And I've found that the slower I eat and drink, the less I burp.

(I wish that there was a "one-size fits all" answer for these questions!)

Your digestive system is configured differently. You will probably always burp more than you're used to, but it can slack off a bit. I burp more when I eat too fast or overeat, but still burp more than I used to. It's not as bad as it used to be, though, and I know it's coming and can cover my mouth and excuse myself. It's better than being fat.

Thanks for all your responses everyone. Well at least I'm now prepared going forward lol. Since im only 4 days post op it hurts quite a bit to burp so that's why it was getting me down. Also, I think the dietician had me on a rigorous schedule to eat then drink Protein Shakes and Water - gosh I felt like I had just eaten Thanksgiving dinner all weekend long (I was banded last thursday). Yesterday i tried to do stuff at my own pace - only drinking or eating when i didnt feel completely terrible. I still got all my Protein shakes, water and meals in I just stretched it out over a longer period of time. I burped less and felt better. I am going to call my doc and dietician today and see what they say. Good luck to you all!

Unfortunately, I'm in the same camp as Mems. I have heartburn, now, in addition to the burping. And you're lucky if you're able to burp "all the way". My stomach/esophagus make these crazy noises that my coworkers have deemed "fireworks" and then I'll start to burp but the burps never follow through and out my mouth. (Sounds gross to describe.) Now nearly every time I eat, I get what feels like hot lava in my chest. I'm sick of this, but at the same time, I'd rather remain -86lbs and counting! I just need to switch back to a healthier diet and stop thinking I can eat things like spaghetti or grits. Oh. And I'm a year out, still "burping" even if they don't make normal burping sounds.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
