Healthier food choices?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, this week was my first week on solids and I must say, I'm tired of broccoli, green Beans, and cauliflower as my side items...

I need a better variety of veggie ideas, this low carb thing is kicking my butt! Like tonight I want to do baked pork chops, but I've had broccoli and green Beans all week and I want to do something different.

Is there anywhere online that has good 'bariatric' recipes/meal ideas?

HELP!

I don't know, but I would like to visit that site as well. I had two weeks of pre-op diet with only shakes, salad and meat, then two weeks of nothing but liquids. I need a little variety!

You are doing so well according to your weight tracker... Share the secret, what are you doing. I was banded on 07/31/09, and weight is moving like I thought it would. I am a little upset but still working hard to obtain my goal.

Thanks for the compliment. I had lost about 45 pounds before my surgery, so I guess that doesn't count. I lost about 23 through my pre-op diet and the first two weeks after surgery. I am just eating what they told me to and trying to get in a little exercise. I think when you are as large as I am, it seems to be a little easier to lose at first. Don't be discouraged, you can do it! I am also from North Carolina, and I wish you all the luck in the world!

There are SOOOOO many cookbooks for dieters. You could go broke, LOL.

Pork chops. I would season them (i'm partial to pepper seasoning, like McCormick's Montreal Steak seasoning) and grill them. Make a spinach salad (unlike iceberg lettuce, which has pretty much NO nutritional value, raw spinach is packed with good stuff) with a little diced boiled egg, a little onion and light raspberry vinagrette dressing (there are a couple of different brands of this on the market, but I like Ken's Steakhouse version best).

Don't be afraid to steam some carrots and put a little bit of light margarine or butter on them and a little Sugar Twin brown sugar. This makes a great treat.

Buy an acorn squash. Cut it in half, scoop out the seeds and put the halves face down in a baking dish and put just a little Water in the pan. Bake at 350 until done (time will depend on the size a bit, but about 30 minutes). A little light margarine and this is yummy.

Spaghetti squash .... bigger but you cook it the same way. When it's done, drag a fork from one end to the other and it will break the squash up into something that looks like spaghetti. Put your spaghetti sauce on it.....tomatoes, mushrooms, onion, garlic (lots of garlic, LOL) ... you won't be thinking that it's not Pasta.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
