GAH! now I am really discouraged re: 6 month thing

Recommended Posts

So, I had started to embrace it. And decided that I would go to my doctor for the 6 months (monthly visits).

Well I just called Blue Care Network to see if that was a covered procedure code. He tells me that I it was to be a weekly weigh in for 6 months. ARGH. I really don't want to join Weight Watchers for the 267th time in my life. Not to mention I really cannot afford it right now.

So now head is swimming again. he tells me that seeing the doctor once a month isn't going to give them what they need to approve me.

blah blah blah!

That stinks! But it's better to go ahead and start now and get the 6 months over with or you might look back 6 months from now and regret it. I was able to use my flex spending to pay for my weight watchers membership (I did have to have my doctor actually prescribe a weight loss program). Are there any other options, like maybe a wellness program through work or a community center? Maybe at the YMCA or Curves, so at least you'd have some other benefit of paying the memebership fee (in my area, one month of weight watchers cost the same as the monthly fee at the Y, and I get much more from the Y than I ever did from WW). Just a thought!

Suz my surgeon has his nurse do the weekly weigh ins for people and chart it for free. You should see if your surgeon offers this. If you're working towards the LB with him alot of the time they will.

Thanks, Brandy. Yup I will definitely be asking him about that. He's actually doing the seminar that I am attending Monday the 14th. Maybe I can find out then!

You know the real kicker...I would sort of like to go through a weight loss program with the same hospital, but the medical instead of surgical. But my insurance won't cover THAT. I just need something drastic at this point. sigh.

Good night! Insurance companies sure do make this process almost impossible don't they? I'd rather take out a loan and pay the bank back. . . that is actually what I'm doing, don't have to jump through hoops so much, just seminar, pay doctor for initial counsel, pay lab fees, pay shrink then 2 weeks before surgery, pay rest. . . very simple. . . was approved over the phone from bank for full amount at only 3% interest. . . so that might be a better way to go. . .

ha - don't I wish I could self pay! But unforutantely I am in so much debt now - there's No Way!

UPDATE - I just called Blue Care Network AGAIN to clarify that weekly weigh ins were the criteria for the 6months. It's not cut and dried according to the woman I spoke with. I have been thinking all this time that it's my PCP who will send all the info in to insurance. It's not - according to her - she says that the Surgeon is the one that decides what I will need to do and HE will be the one to submit info to the insurance. THAT really clears thingsup for me. So I will just simmer down and wait and see what he says to me on the 26th. Maybe I am getting my panties in a wad over nothing, then again maybe I will be doing some major hoop - jumping!

Suzy, I'm sorry you are discouraged! I don't understand why seeing a doctor once a month isn't good enough. Isn't that documentation? Maybe you should call the insurance company again and speak to someone else. In the meantime, maybe it would be a good idea to start WW. Or maybe look at your local hospital; sometimes they have WW-like programs for less money. Or, see if your insurance company would pay for you to see a special doctor for purely just weight loss. (Sometimes I hate these insurance companies) Just don't give up!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
