3 days post-op.. Appetite not there && having a hard time getting in 64 oz of liquids

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I was just banded this past Tuesday 9/8/09. Im doing pretty good as far as the pain and healing goes .. still a little sore but Im feeling better as each day passes. But Im having a hard time eating due to the fact that I have little to no appetite. Im also finding it hard to sip constantly throughout the day to get all of the liquids I need. Im suppose to take in 64 oz each day and I can barely finish a 20 oz bottle of Water.

Has anyone else had or is having this problem??

Im worried that Im already out on a bad start because Im not eating or drinking enough.

Is this normal? ..

Im able to get down my Multivitamin and Calcium but as far as the right amount of food Protein and liquid ... no good

20 oz of Fluid isn't nearly adequate and you'll end up dehydrated...possibly over the weekend, and in for a trip to the ER.

Do you HAVE to sip? For many of us, Fluid flows easily and while you wouldn't want to chug, you can swallow.

If you can't; call your surgeon. You'll need immediate intervention. I don't mean to frighten you but dehydration is serious and you don't want it. You've probably been ok so far because of fluids pumped into you during surgery but it won't last. Dehydration can kill an animal (like us!) WAY faster than starvation ever will. We can't go without liquids.< /p>

Thank you!! .. I never thought about it that way I guess because Im so scared that I will stretch my little pouch. I guess I shouldn't forget that liquids do go down differently than the food. With that in mind I will definately get down more liquids and prevent dehydration. BACK to the hospital is the last place I want to be!!

It's a LOT to learn! Just work on making sure you're hydrated; as you heal and move through the food stages it will get easier. Think of how long it takes babies to learn to eat? (peas everythere, etc) at least we don't do THAT (? LOL) but we do have to learn quantities, to chew, how bit a bite, and in some cases what we even CAN eat. So it's easy to get stalled out and confused.

you are only three days post-op. you should not be trying to drink all that Water. in one day,i was told to sip through out the day, even i did not get 64oz, in.i was on 1 ounce of ensure four times a day.i was noy hungry.just take tiny sips through the day, until you feel you can takein more.

Most docs require 64 oz a day from the start. Sil's doc is in the minority; and yes you can dehydrate quickly. Not all of us need to "sip" either. If you aren't swollen and don't have fill, it's safe to drink normally. Check with your doc (he may have filled you during surgery) but even at my sweet spot I can drink Water normally and most can too. you don't chug it, but it goes through just fine. So you don't need to be paranoid and constantly sip all day long unless you want to do that, honestly.

Again, call your doc if you doubt. But I was told to proceed carefully but stay hydrated. As I've often said my doc let them give me Water in the hospital before I was released for home (fairly soon post op) and I drank a good 20-30 ounces in the first hour they let me. Not all day, the first hour. No I'm not superwoman either.

But water goes through just fine.

Hi i just recently been banded on Tuesday September 8. So far I have been okay just really tired and no appetite at all as well. My doctor said it will take a few days to get used to your new pouch since your stoma is so small right now. Just try and sip as much Water throughout the day as possible. DOnt forget to add your Protein :cursing:

Thank you all for your advice. I've let go of the sipping and have been sticking to a more normal swallow but still keeping it away from a gulp. Im getting in a lot more liquids now .. still not quite the 64 oz but enough to keep hydrated. I guess you could say Im more comfortable now and I've gotten used to my band and these new feelings I feel during and after eating or drinking.

I also have an appetite now .. nothing great but im able to say that I eat each day. Things are getting better!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
