Dangers of Drinking Too Fast?

Recommended Posts

What are the actual dangers of drinking too fast? Is it just that it can make you sick, or can it actually stretch your pouch?

I only ask because I seem to have a real problem stretching out my Protein Shakes to the 60 minutes my doctor says. In fact, 15-20 minutes is about the longest I can stretch an 8oz beverage out.

So am I in danger of stretching my pouch, or is this just a "it can make you sick" situation?

Thanks.

My doctor didn't tell me to stretch out the Protein Shake. He did say to drink slowly, but it sounded more of like drink what you can tolerate. I was banded on 9/4/9 and have NO trouble drinking at a normal rate, whether it's Water, shake, or Soup. I do feel full, but not in a stuck way. Good luck.

You can, indeed, get stuck on liquid and it is painful. But if you can swallow at a reasonably normal rate (do watch out for taking a big gulp because that can get stuck), then go ahead. I certainly don't take an hour to drink anything, LOL

I can drink at a higher than normal rate, and feel nothing in the pouch, nor any pain or other negative sensation. I might guess that it's a function of how tight your band is set. Mine is loose (until this Thursday).

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
