first fill: will I have restriction?

Recommended Posts

Hi I am 4 weeks post op and am able to eat as much as I want although I am trying to be careful. My first fill is in 3 weeks, and I am wondering what I will be feeling like after the fill. I know some experience restriction after first fill, but some dont. Was wondering what different peoples experiences were with their first fill.

You know the answer; maybe, or maybe not. My doc is a conservative one (and studies indicate that might be safest, but who knows? It was frustrating, I'll say that!) and it took me to fill 5 to feel anything. Fill #7, though, was the "golden" one, at least for now.

Since I don't have any problems so far, no GERD, no excessive PB'ing, can eat ANYTHING (including white bread, dry chicken, red meat, etc etc) I am happy and really don't mind that it took a while to get to my "happy place". I'd prefer that to things like "first bite syndrome", esophageal spasms, being so tight your stomach swells and you can't swallow your own saliva, etc. So slow and steady worked for me.

I will say this: My surgeon WOULD have filled me faster but he took the time to explain his rationale of slower fills to me, and while anxious to "get started" I agreed with his logic. Apparently, he was right.

My doc put 1.5cc in at the time the band was placed, and then at my first fill he got me up to 2.4ccs (I think those numbers are right - something like that... I know I'm at 2.4ccs anyway).

When I went in for my 2nd fill, we decided to forego it. I don't think I'm at my sweetspot - I have some restriction and I'm losing at a good clip. Those are what matter. It's almost like a safety net for me. I suppose if I need my safety net reinforced, I'll get more in there then. If I stop losing weight or start "abusing" my ability to have both control and satiety. But for now, with 1 fill and 2.4ccs, I'm in a good place.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
