Hi...I am wondering what kind of diet everyone did for the pre-op? I havent met with the surgeon yet, but insurance requires 5% loss for coverage...I have a terrible time losing and afraid I wont get it off in 6 months...I need to lose 16lbs...maybe more once I speak with the surgeon

TIA!

Hey Lauri,

I am on a 2 week pre-op diet: 5 x slimfast items (shakes or bars) per day plus one regular meal basically consisting of 5oz. lean meat, turkey, chicken, fish and 2 cups of non-starchy veg. I have lost 11.7lb in 12 days! I dont think you will have any problems loosing the pre-op weight if you stick to the diet. The first two days were really tough for me but Im used to it now and it doesnt bother me. I have to lose 14.5lb (5% of my body weight) by my surgery date which is Thursday next week and I don't think I'll have a problem based on the past 12 days. Hope this helps reassure you that the docs know what they're doing when they give you their diet - just follow whatever diet he gives you to the letter (no matter how difficult) and you WILL lose the weight by surgery date! Good luck to you

don't worry 16 lb on a liquid diet is a piece of cake lol pardon the pun. I am required to do a 2 week and we were told in seminar if you haven't lost at least 5 lb a week during that (most lose more) then you are not following instructions.

YOU CAN DO IT.

I had to do a 6-month preop diet, with no set amount to lose. The doctor wanted 2 Protein Shakes of 30-40g of Protein plus a small, high-protein dinner. I ended up being on it for 8 months because of being hospitalized for pneumonia for a couple of weeks and went off it for about a month. Anyway, I didn't follow it real close the last few weeks, except I wasn't doing exceptional pigging out. I ended up losing 49 pounds. I had to do totally liquid for 2 days before surgery. I drank the Isopure Zero Carb drinks that have 40g of Protein in 20 ounces. I lost about 7 of those 49 pounds just on those.

Good luck. You can do it.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
