How long on liquid diet only?

Recommended Posts

I'm 2 weeks out from my surgery. My Dr wants me to stay on the strictly liquid diet for 3 weeks. From what I can tell almost no one else's Dr goes that long.

And I'm having a hard time. I've been pretty good sticking to his rules. But when did most of you start eating mushies? Three weeks just seems a long time.

Thanks

I got to start mushies at week 3 but locally there are surgeons (I know from my preop research) that require a 4-week clear liquid diet post op, so it's not unheard of. It sounds to me like your doc just wants to make sure that you heal and the band heals well into place. It's hard, but do as you are directed. Remember each surgeon knows himself (or herself) best and knows what yields the optimimum result for his/her patients. Your doc probably has you on 3 weeks liquids because he feels it's best.

If you are just starved, call and ask if you can advance early, but don't just do it because others get to.

I was also on Clear Liquids for 3 days and then full liquids for 2 weeks. Ask your surgeon for clarification!

I saw my Dr yesterday and he OK'ed more full liquids WooHoo! But he wants me to stay on liquids for the 3rd week. I am doing what he tells me.

And...I've dropped 29 lbs from my last weigh in about 2 weeks pre-surgery. So that's a really good thing.)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
