What am I doing wrong?

Recommended Posts

I am 6 weeks post op. I had a few complications after surgery with swelling and a prefilled band, so my doctor had to pull all Fluid out for a while. I just got my first fill yesterday. I have only 2 cc's in a 10cc band (he did very little because I seem to be sensitive to fills). Anyways, I am on regular food diet but since yesterday, when I attempt to eat anything, it seems to hurt going down. Even soft foods. Plus, the burping...OMG, the burping is horrible. Not sliming, just belching up a storm. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? Are you guys actually able to eat real food without it hurting? Do you all have the belching thing? I'm freaking out thinking something is wrong with me or I'm doing something wrong.:sneaky:

I too have the belching issue! Certainly not PB, thank goodness. I don't drink through a straw, eat or drink fast, so I'm not sure why I belch soooo much.

It's kind of embarrassing. My husband laughs. We have been together for 15 years and up until 5 weeks ago had never really heard me belch.

I tend to belch when I go too long between meals .... but, gawd, I could compete with any CRD guy on the planet (CRD = crude, rude and disrespectful, LOL). Back much closer to my surgery, I did even more belching. I think it's kind of common and certainly not an indication of a problem.

You said: "Anyways, I am on regular food diet but since yesterday, when I attempt to eat anything, it seems to hurt going down. Even soft foods." Even Water can get stuck if you take too big a swallow, so I'll ask if you're sure you are taking smaller bites (about the size of a nickel) and chewing well the stuff that should be chewed? This was really hard for me to get used to. I realized that I used to take really big bites and chew them about half-way at best. Big bites of everything including pudding, yogurt, poached eggs...EVERYTHING. And I had to really focus on that as my problem.

Hope this helps.

Get used to the belching it's going to be a long term thang. lol. I know it's embarassing. Sometimes all I have to do is lean forward and it just comes out.

Usually after a fill, many docs say to do liquids 24 hours, then mushies then "regular". If you are sensitive, perhaps you tried to eat too soon? If I were you I'd be conservative and do liquids 24-48, then mushie 24-48. and then on to "regular" (which is what my doc recommends, by the way, when he thinks we're close to "the sweet spot")

Once you've given your sensitive stomach a chance to settle, then do as others have suggested: take small bites and chew very very well. Wait a bit between bites to see if you need more food or are no longer hungry. And take a while to eat because our digestive systems don't register food for about 20 minutes. If you eat too fast and expect "hunger" to guide you, you can end up in trouble.

Just take it slow, and don't be nervous. It's a learning process!

OMG, the leaning over and belching thing. I can so relate. I was unloading the dishwasher and everytime I bent down to get a dish I belched like a sailor. My doctor never mentioned anything about having to do liquids then mushies after a fill but it definitely sounds smart. I had some Soup today and that was a breeze, but oh, last night, food was difficult. As far as my bite sizes, that is probably still a problem. I guess because I have been so used to taking such big bites before, I think I am eating small bites but in reality, probably not. I will work on that. Thanks again everyone.

I always say "Do what YOUR doc tells you" but in your circumstance, as sensitive as you are, moving slowly back to regular can't hurt and I will cross my fingers that it helps! (that and the small bites well chewed!) Good luck, matey (LOL Burp)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
