APRA - Why are they giving me grief?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys my name is Sarah,

I am wanting to hear from anyone who has had their surgery funded by their super and it has been approved for release by APRA. I sent my forms in and they have written to me to say that they want more information from my doctor and for me to explain why I cannot get a loan to pay for my surgery.

I am 155cm and 160kg. Surely they can see this is not right. This is my last hope. I am so scared they are gonna turn me down. My surgery is booked in for the 16th December.

Please any assurance, tips or help would be greatly appreciated.:smile2:

hi

i had private health insurance so dont have info about super funding but reading posts from other people over the past year i get the impression that they are just covering their ass'. i have noticed that everyone in the same situation thinks the same thing about why they ask these questions and i suppose it would be for one reason only, to make sure all options are covered, i would not worry too much about this and just do what they require because that would also show them that you are determined that this is the best option for you. i understand what you are saying about being your only option because it also was for me but stick with it and i am sure it will workout in the end. i had some hurdles with my op, firstly when i went to a physocologist and her letter of recommendation to my surgeon was that i should not have the op because i could loose weight with out the surgery if i had a good professional support team of weight loss experts and also that i was serverly depressed and suffered high anxiety, wouldnt you if you were my size, and secondly i have a colostomy with a large stoma hernia so my surgeon said that i might have open surgery instead of keyhole if he could get behind the hernia to put in the band. the only thing i was stressing about was the physcologist report and 2 weeks before the op i couldnt sleep but it turned out that i worried for nothing and got the op keyhole and all. i found that because i had made my mind up i should have this op no matter what anyone says and you will also feel the same way you will find a way to have the band and fight like hell for it. remember we all have moments before surgery were we think it will all come undone but you need to stick with it and fight for your right to have this surgery, for your health and your future.:smile2:

keep us posted how you go with your journey.

also they might be weeding out any people that might want to have the band done because they think its an easy way to loose weight so they are making sure you are commited to this. i have some larger friends that say to me good on you for losing weight but its only because you cheated by having lapbanding, yeah right.:smile2:

It funny Pink Princess that you mentioned about the lapbanding and people's comments on it. The Brisbane newspaper, the Courier Mail did a story on me a few months ago when this debate was on about whether it should be covered by Medicare. My GP would not write a letter to get the surgery until he has monitored me on a weight loss program for a year. I have had so many tests and they cannot figure out what is going on. I go to the gym 5 days a week. I am a healthy 160kg person....apparently!?%&

Fingers crossed that APRA come thru :smile2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
