Not overeating but getting enough protein? Need help!

Recommended Posts

Hi --

I was banded on Aug 17 and have lost 8lbs so far. Not sure if that's good, average or great.

Anyway, I'm now on mushies, purees, etc. and my nutrionist wants me to up my Protein to 60 - 75 grams daily. How on earth do I get that much Protein without overeating?

I don't want to gain before my first fill (scheduled for Oct. 6). And my nutrionist doesn't want me using the bullet shots of protein.

Any ideas?

Well, let's see if it can be done. I've had this question in the back of my mind for a few days (just banded 8/24 - not to puree stage yet, but soon). I'm going to make a list below of things I'd be likely to eat and their Protein content.

7 oz. Fage Greek yogurt = 17gr

1 cup pureed Beans = 15gr

1 oz lowfat cheddar or colby = 7gr

Lactose Free, Protein Enhanced 2% milk , 1 cup = 14gr

Breakstone LivActive 2% Cottage cheese 4oz = 10gr

That looks like a pretty good start to me. I'd probably make some thin Cream of Wheat with the milk. Eat the Beans for lunch. Maybe have 2 of the cottage cheese servings over the course of the day or have them for dinner. I usually add a couple ounces of frozen blueberries to my yogurt, I'll probably thaw them and puree them for the mushy stage.

I hope this helps you. It may not be the kinds of things you're used to eating, but I could totally live on some variation of this for a few weeks. Probably throw in some pureed veggies and some Soup here or there.

Edit: Looking back at it, I see that the menu is pretty dairy intensive. But that would work for me. I wonder how cottage cheese and tuna would taste pureed together w/some seasoning?

Thanks for the ideas! I pureed a black bean Soup and was disappointed in the Protein content, but I think if I did my own from a can of Beans (instead of can of soup) that would up the content.

I'm going to look at doing some tuna and salmon salads.

Today I tried using a WW smoothie (10g of protein) and using 1/2 of that as a Creamer for my coffee (cheating, I know). I think it will work better if I do the smoothie in the blender.

Yes, feeling very dairy heavy!

Thanks!

Hi, Joshesgirl! I don't have an answer for you...I just wanted to say "hi", because we have a lot in common! I was also banded on Aug 17th, also lost 8lbs post surgery, also getting first fill Oct 6th! Only difference is that my surgeon moved me from Clear Liquids to solids, skipping over mushies. I still find myself eating a lot of the mushies, though. I have found that I like to eat scrambled eggs with cheese, and chicken salad (not together). Good luck to you!

Hey...I was getting in 80 grams of Protein a day in the mushies stage without Protein drinks so I hope some of these tips can help you too. pureed boiled egg whites (puree with a little skim milk) can be added to almost anything creamy...I always put it in my cream of wheat in the morning and it was delicious. Also, pureed tofu is helpful. A lot of people fear tofu but it has no taste and will take on the flavor of whatever you add it to. I put a high Protein mash potatoe recipe in the recipes section here and it was amazing tasting with tons of protein. Laughing cow light cheese is very creamy and low in fat and calories but can help add some protein into your food. Also, you can put the cans or foil packs of tuna, salmon, or chicken into the food processor and get a very nice consistency that is easy to get down.

I hope that helps...good luck!

needed to add that the egg whites were boiled not scrambled

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
