I don't know what to expect. Did I zone out when they talked about pre-op?

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery Sept. 22nd and have my pre-op meeting tomorrow. Until I joined this site I didn't know you had to be on a liquid diet prior to surgery. I've read some that say 4 weeks and some say 2 weeks. Or is this just additional liquids to your diet? I know I can get my answers tomorrow - but I want to sleep tonite and I'll be up all night wondering! Any help is greatly appreciated - also do you spend the night in the hospital?:smile2:

I don't have to be on a liquid diet till 2 days before my surgery. I guess it all depends on your dr and other things. I'm sure you will find out more tomorrow. Good luck

bless you heart, i read during my research that they recommend you follow a diet to help shrink the liver a bit as well as the stomach. I found this information under the search engine and i typed in diet before lap band surgery. try that and see what you think. Good luck, hope this helps

Most of that info will be obtained during your preop, not everyone has to go on a liquid diet. I did spend 2 days in the hospital... they should tell you that as well. I know how nerve racking this can all be. But you are in the right place for questions. Feel free to message me and I will tell you anything you want to know, good luck and enjoy oyur journey!

Agreed; not everyone needs or has a preop diet, and even within a practice the length etc can change depending on the patient! So don't fret, and good luck!

I had my pre-op appointment yesterday. Chest X-ray, bloodwork, EKG...wasn't expecting all that, but no problems. I won't be going on a liquid diet at all until after surgery. I do South Beach Diet Phase 1, a week prior to surgery and no food, liquids etc. midnight the night before surgery. I'm not sure if this is because I have a low BMI or what, but I really want to thank everyone for the information! I love this site!

Hi-we are about the same weight and BMI. Have you voted on the September bandsters name poll? Look under September 2009 to find the poll. The September folks are posting under two different areas, the pre-op area, and the 09/09 area.

I had my pre-op Thursday. Friday I went in for more blood draw, it seemed like they didn't get enough Thursday.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
