Head is Swimming

Ok I went to PCP yesterday and discussed me being a candidate for the surgery. He was supportive of it. Told me who to get in touch with. St. John Weight Loss - Dr. Hawasli.

I will have to do a 6-month supervised diet / exercise routine. I am little bit disappointed in that. I mean the reason I have decided to seek this is I have hit my rock bottom. I know it's not the magic wand for weight loss or the quick fix. BUT I've been down that road so many times I've lost count. And now lately everytime I try to "eat right and do right"..I tank out after a week. I am tired. I need to get a good amount of weight off so that I can feel better physically and be able to exercise. Sigh.

I am going to a seminar on Sept 14.

Is it the surgeons office that is requiring the 6 mth diet or your insurance....my insurance use to require it but now it doesn't....I found out during my 5th month of my phys supervised diet.. but now all is well I have my surgery date of 10/13/2009.

I don't really have a problem with having to wait now that it is almost over. I really needed the time to make sure that i was ready to make major changes in my life. Good luck!!

Congrats on your surgery date!!!!! I know you must be thrilled and excited!! What type of diet plan have you been following? I have no idea what to do there...go to my doctor or a clinic or what. What type of insurance do you have?? I have Blue Care Network (Michigan)

It's the insurance that is requiring it.

And now I am on the hunt for a psychologist for that exam... of course the only one on the list of numbers that I was given, I was told that they usually want you to come back 3 times. Anyone ever have that happen?

I am a bit lost right now.

Suz, GO TO THE SURGEON'S OFFICE! They can do the supervision, recommend the diet to follow, etc. You can also be completing your pre-op testing during the supervised diet so that everything will be completed and ready to submit at the end of the supervised diet.

I just went to my family dr for the phys supervised diet. I also got him to recommend a dr for the psyc exam. It went pretty fast. I went to the clinic where i am having my surgery for the nutritionist visit. I have only lost about 6 pounds during the last 5 months.. I have had too many last dinners LOL!! I have an appt with my surgeon on 9/17 and I am following a low carb, low fat diet until then. I will then be put on a medically supervised liquid diet for 4 weeks (due to high BMI) before surgery. I hope to lose about 10 pds before the liquid diet...

I have bc/bs through empire....I was approved in three days once paperwork was sent ....

Good luck on your journey and you will be so surprised just how fast the process goes once you get started!!

Hey Cathy = The surgeon's office told me that they cannot be the ones that have anything to do with my 6 month diet - it would be a "conflict of interest" to the insurance company I guess.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
