too much alcohol, what happens?

Recommended Posts

If you drink too much, and you need to throw up, what happens? Does it move through the band and come up or just stew in the stomach? Has anyone had this experience? What about stomach flu too?

One of my concerns and pre-op questions was what happens if I get food poisioning or the flu and throw up. Just the thought of that is painful.

My surgeon advised that should either happen to get in asap and they will do a complete unfill. Once it passed then back to the fill process.

NOt a drinker so at least I don't have to worry about that possibility.

Good question. I've wondered that myself. I think I saw a couple of posters say the have medication to prevent vomiting incase they get sick. My doc didn't give me anything like that but certainly worth asking about it. Especially with flu season around the corner.

I recently got blind, falling down drunk while on a girls' night out, and it was horrible, not being able to 'get it all out' when my body really seemed to need to.

I kept going to the toilet to see if I could yak everything out, but it just wouldn't come out. And the more I tried, the more painful it was. In the end, I gave up, and was so uncomfortable that a girlfriend ended up taking me home, where I flaked out on the bed. Not a nice way to end the night.

The next morning, my band was very tight, and I suspect that I irritated my stoma with my repeated attempts to throw up. I went on to liquids for a day or two, then was fine again. Funnily enough, I didn't even have the slightest hangover. Go figure.

Moral of the story: don't get so drunk you need to throw up.

God. thankfully at 42, I've left that in my dim dark past, last time I was that drunk I was probably 18.

I've never gotten sick and needed to vomit either since banding. My doc said at the info night, for some people, its like normal, for some, they dry retch for hours and cant get anything up. Whatever the case, he said to always have anti nausea medication to hand and come in for an unfill if at all possible. My kids have had gastro about 50 times since my banding, as kids do and I have been freakishly obsessive with cleanliness, I even Glen 20 the couch after they've sat on it, lol. Go through 500 pairs of disposable gloves, bottles of bleach etc. BUT it has worked and i've never caught it.

Lol Jachut, I'm 39 and it was the first time in about 8 years that I was so drunk that I needed to throw up. I don't even think I drank that much that night. I suspect that it was more to do with the fact that I hadn't eaten much that day instead.

Though after that night, I have made a promise to myself that I will never get that drunk again. Being drunk is bad enough. Being drunk with the band is a truly horrible experience.

Hussy, lol.

I think there's more than a few of us who have gotten a shock at the lower tolerance to alcohol we have when we're not washing it down with a huge meal and then soaking it up with a 2 am kebab or hot dog!

I cant handle more than 2 or 3 wines now and THAT will see me tipsy, whereas I could drink many people under the table before. I would never have more than one to drive, and a small one at that.

I also fear that I will lose my eating caution if I've had a few and forget to eat slowly. Alcohol and food all mixed up, coming out your nose, ugh.

It's funny, but in hindsight, eating was the furthest thing from my mind while I was drinking, which is so not like me usually (the 2am kebab was a staple for me in my early years).

So you're right, with the way I eat now, one glass wine and I'm feeling it already. I'm such a cheap date now!

Could have had your drink spiked too. It's so common now even in Adelaide (city of churches turned into sleazy night clubs). Just don't do shots, you'll be o.k. Champagne slows me down so much it's not funny....the bubbles I think. So if I don't wanna drink too much I order one of those. One will last the whole dinner.

I caught gastro (stomach flu I think you statesiders call it) not long after my banding. I was chuckin every half hour for about 4 hours. I was terrified the band would slip. It was fine. In 7 years since the banding, I've had many a throw, lol, some cause I ate too quick, or drank too much (ate not enough), even cause my bra was too tight! I wouldn't stress.

Graciebelle, I hear you on the drink spiking. It's pretty common over here in Perth as well - in fact a friend of mine ended up in hospital after just one drink in a club recently.

But we always had one of the girls at the table with our drinks, and the bouncer (an elderly guy who was just so sweet) watched over us all night. This was at the Crown Casino in Melbourne and we were all very very cautious because it's a bit of a meat market there.

TBH, I was drinking French Martini's and I think just one of those would have knocked my socks off. Everyone else was drinking champagne, but I avoided it exactly because the bubbles make my tummy feel funny.

See.. for me pre band it was a 2am bacon/egg/& cheese on a bagel with a side of cheese fries.... is it any wonder I was 300 pounds!!

Pre-band, I could out drink just about anyone. Pre-band it was the one sport I was good at - wait its not a sport????

Anyway, these days much more of a lightweight - which is a good thing.

Isnt it weird how wine burns now?

I have to have something in my stomach to drink wine. Often when you go out for dinner, its late, you've saved up all day and are STARVING. Always you get a drink first, while looking at the menu. It's liek drinking freaking battery acid!

Of course, I still do it, lol.

Keep Quickeeze or Mylanta tablets in your bag and eat one just as you go in. That's what I do. I also wear a bra strap extender & loosen it in the loo, it makes me more comfortable when I'm sitting down & eating.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
