How soon after surgery can you lift??

Recommended Posts

I have a 9 month old son and am scheduled to have surgery on Oct. 1. He does not walk yet so I am wondering how long it will be until I can pick him up??? I know that i will not be able to lift him in the car seat...i can hardly do that now...but what about just him? Does anyone else have this problem??

OMG my son just turned 8 months and I was banded thursday...the Dr. Told me not to pick him up for 4-6 weeks. That's almost impossible for a mom. And really hard for me not to lift him I cried the other day cause I wanted to pick him up so bad. It really. Does make a difference if you do your best cause you will really pay for it if you don't do what your told. Good Luck to you and I hope I feel better soon cause I hate this.

4-6 weeks!!!! OMG I don't know how I will ever be able to do that! I have to get him ready and bring him to daycare in the mornings! My husband goes to work at 6 am so he is not home in the mornings and I don't have any family around...not sure what I am going to do!!

My daughter was 1 when I had the surgery. I told my husband he'd have to take a few weeks off to do the heavy lifting of my stay at home mum life. After a week he got bored & went back to work (self employed, family business). I was shitty as hell at him. We have 18 stairs in our house too. So I did what I could & left the rest for him to do when he got home. My daughter took her naps downstairs & I'd sit down when she wanted to be picked up so she'd have to climb up on me. It worked out fine. Even getting her in and out of the car seat. Just really take your time. If you can call the day care centre, tell them you have a hernia or something & ask if someone can come out to the car in the mornings when you arrive to get your son out. I had no one around either. Don't worry. You'll be o.k.

My doctor told me not to lift over 20 lbs for the first 4 weeks. Why not hire (if you can) a mothers helper. Or if you have a local teenager who could help before and after school. Teens can always use a little money. Don't overdo it as you could do internal damage and not realize it. You don't want to undo anything.

Now I'm worried. I asked this specific question (how long after surgery until I can pick up my 1 year old daughter) and my doctor told me about a week. That was my main concern and my number one question. He said for me to be careful and not overdo things but never once was I told 4 weeks! Cripes!

My doctor told me 4-6 weeks because our ports are muscle under the skin, that's why it hurts after surgery. By lifting something heavy too soon we can pop a stich. Its hard because I have an 8 month old but thank God I have help.

I have heard it's 4 weeks.....but that's a guideline, I agree it's just so you dont pop a stich. I have a 4 year old who's 45 pounds and I have realized I pick him up all the time! I just have to be carefull because he's BIG but with a baby ... they dont weigh that much, right? I know ... tough!

My daughter is almost 20 pounds. Since the doctor told me about a week, I only made arrangements for help for one week. I guess I will figure out ways to not pick her up much the last 3 weeks.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
